Thomas Tuchel’s England have embraced the mandatory expectations of an eager audience ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup opener against Croatia.
The German oversaw a training camp in Kansas City on Sunday, where cameras were permitted for 15 minutes ahead of their Group L fixture in Dallas. Amongst those enjoying themsleves was Marcus Rashford.
Images shared on social media portray a happy player who appears unconcerned about his club future, amid Barcelona’s decision not to trigger their £26 million purchase clause.
With two years remaining on a £325,000-a-week deal at Manchester United, speculation has begun to surface regarding the prospect of an unlikely reunion in the North West.
Still, with Barca keen on retaining the Wythenshawe man’s services through a further loan agreement, and revelations regarding a release clause in his contract at Old Trafford, what is the likely outcome this summer?
Where does Marcus Rashford stand with Barcelona and Manchester United?
Technically speaking, the 28-year-old could potentially rekindle his relationship with the Stretford End and contribute to Michael Carrick’s attack in a Champions League return.
The Reds are weighing up their options in the market across multiple positions, and left wing is an ongoing topic of interest for Jason Wilcox and Co.
Make no mistake, 142 goal contributions from 297 Premier League appearances is a remarkable return for any player, and on paper, would benefit this United side.
But the scar tissue of a tumultuous period before his departure opens the door for an unsavoury scenario upon a potential return, one that could jeopardise a harmonious dressing room.
Not to mention the financial ramifications of a package that is a little shy of £34m for the remainder of his deal, we’re long advised that officials have moved on internally and do not see a path forward with Marcus.
It’s worth remembering that Matheus Cunha was also handed Rashford’s number 10 shirt last season.
Per David Ornstein in The Athletic, “there is a £40m clause available to all admirers — bar local rivals Liverpool and Manchester City”, fuelling further reports of interest at home and abroad.
The million-dollar question is what that destination looks like, and if a Spanish return is remotely possible.
Without question, United will want their former star to enjoy a fruitful World Cup, inadvertently building a collection of suitors who were willing to recruit his services.
Nonetheless, Rashford’s heart remains committed to Camp Nou, and Hansi Flick remains keen on acquiring his English forward, however absurd that may seem following Anthony Gordon’s arrival.
Barca have weighed up the cost of a €30 million transfer fee plus a sizeable salary, factoring in any amortised deal for the player. Without overcomplicating this, Gordon returns a cheaper annual payment.
Presently, the 20-time English champions have little desire to renegotiate a deal on lower terms or an additional loan, despite the ever-public moves from Deco and the player’s desires.
Still, time remains, and there are ongoing conversations through intermediaries.
It may appear odd, after everyhting that has been and gone, but Barca are prepared to play the longest of games to achieve their goals, even beyond publicly revealed deadlines.
Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have been reported as potential alternatives, while Milan is also a club that we have previously revealed is retaining an outside interest.
Closer to home, Aston Villa will participate in the Champions League and enjoyed a promising spell with Rashford during the second half of the 2024-25 season.
Still, despite all that has occurred at Old Trafford, our sources have long indicated that a continental destination is the predominant desire in any permanent move.
For now, his focus will remain solely targeted on England and the World Cup, with ample time for club conversations until the window shuts on September 1st.
Would you like to see Marcus Rashford make a storybook return to Manchester United, or has that chapter come to an end?
