From time to time, a result reverberates across the continent, with the ramifications potentially acting as a building block towards something far greater.
Although Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are not quite at that point in this Ineos rebuild, an Anfield victory represents a distinguished moment in time, and without question, the standout outing of the Portuguese tactician’s tenure in the North West.
Naturally, the usual naysayers will attempt to belittle the result and performance for fear of providing any form of compliments to the 20-time English champions.
Still, home disappointments are far and few between for Arne Slot’s side, and away success stories are even further for their Manchester rivals.
From Bryan Mbeumo’s opener after 62 seconds to Harry Maguire’s game-winning header six minutes from time, Amorim’s men were well-coached and largely singing from the same hymn sheet, albeit Lady Luck smiled on a couple of occasions.
But good fortune is required throughout a successful season, and the United faithful have been deprived of plenty during the opening stages. As any Red will tell you, what better setting to recoup a well-earned reprieve?
Can this Anfield success provide a catalyst for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United?
It’s fair to say that the former Sporting chief has endured a difficult period since making the mid-season move to Old Trafford.
Before a ball was kicked on Sunday, he had overseen 50 fixtures as manager and was the unfortunate holder of a losing record (W20, D9, L21). Nevertheless, his methods and commitment to the task have impressed Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with the billionaire publicly declaring his support at the beginning of October.
Fast-forward to Monday morning, and the 40-year-old has claimed consecutive Premier League victories for the first time, with his side sitting two points off Champions League football and six off league leaders Arsenal.
It may be simplistic for some – objectively wild even – but sometimes, good things require a bit of suffering beforehand.
When you inherit a poisoned throne sitting deep within the foundations of a football club that has been criminally mismanaged for two decades, the necessity to cleanse a rotten core must supersede the impractical ideology set about by a bloodthirsty media.
Amorim’s insistence on a particular platform or a well-documented stubbornness may very well act as the seeds to his downfall. Still, even the most vocal of begrudgers can surely applaud his mental fortitude along the way?
Alongside Ineos, he is cultivating a notably promising squad, with Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens, and Matheus Cunha already earning plenty of plaudits despite a minuscule sum of 28 appearances between them.
In Cunha, we are aware of his ability, but his showing during the second half in Merseyside typified the nature of the attacker. The Brazilian may yet to have scored, but his skillset and character suggest the Stretford End may have inherited its latest kingpin.
While in goals, our Belgian recruit has already been likened to Peter Schmeichel due to his calming presence and domineering attitude in and around his area.
For a man making his second appearance in Red, Lammens was a pillar of class amidst a backdrop of jeers, silencing the Kop and their multi-million-pound Swedish striker in the process.
The growing partnership of Amad and Mbeumo has the capabilities to destroy any left-sided defensive structure in Europe, while young Sesko, despite nonsensical articles, is beginning to look at home in Manchester.
All of this positivity is the byproduct of a head coach who has remained committed to his plan, his players, and his pre-determined ideals.
Can this Anfield success prove to be the defining catalyst for this United team? Yes, without a glimmer of hesitation. Nevertheless, it will stand for nothing if this group does not maintain the momentum earned against Brighton at Old Trafford.
A trio of home league victories is not to be scoffed at, particularly for a team that endured such trauma last season. Still, nothing is given in England’s top tier, and the Manchester United of old would commit to taking from this point.
We have witnessed the charisma of Ruben with the media, the public words of encouragement exuding from the players, and the widespread support of a hierarchy that is building towards Project 150.
But the scars of last season have left an indelible mark on a wounded fanbase, and hope has become one of the most dangerous words ushered into the Theatre of Dreams.
However, if ever there was a moment to grasp everything from a singular result, now is the time to begin turning the screw.
