Following weeks of negotiations, Alejandro Garnacho has completed his permanent move to Chelsea in a deal worth £40 million plus a 10% sell-on clause for Manchester United.
The 21-year-old departs the North West after four seasons in the first team, having joined United’s academy in October 2020 for a fee of £420,000 from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
With 26 goals and 22 assists from 144 senior appearances for United, the controversial youngster arrives at a Chelsea outfit bursting with talent, hoping to build upon his 2023 Puskas Award and two domestic cup winners’ medals.
He will contend with an array of international names for playing time, adding to the mammoth list of stars acquired since Todd Boehly’s arrival in London in May 2022.
Crucially, United will save approximately £7.8 million in salary payments alongside the transfer fee, allowing for additional financial movement towards continued investment in Ruben Amorim’s squad.
Alejandro Garnacho swaps Manchester for Chelsea
In many ways, Garnacho’s departure is something that the Old Trafford faithful had envisaged since his emergence on the senior stage, with a style and swagger reminiscent of the early days of his hero Cristiano Ronaldo.
His starring role in a memorable FA Youth Cup success in 2022 provided a much-needed boost for a disgruntled fanbase, as a staggering 67,492 attended the Old Trafford showpiece.
Fittingly, a brace against Nottingham Forest in the final typified his flamboyant qualities, with the former Getafe youth earning the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for his efforts along the way.
As he progressed through the phases with a Jekyll and Hyde first team, tallies of six goals and six assists in 2022-23 improved to 10 and seven the following season, with a career-best 11 and 10 achieved throughout a hit-and-miss campaign that saw United crumble to a 15th-place Premier League standing.
Unfortunately, controversy was never far from the attacker’s side. A petulant demeanour often reared its head following a substitution or omission from a starting XI, resulting in unsavoury social antics.
Out of respect for the good times shared, I will avoid diving any deeper.
Instead, everybody at the Theatre of Red thanks Alejandro for the years of service he provided Manchester United, and we wish him the best for his career.
For Amorim, the move signals further growth towards his desired dressing room while adding additional spending power for his Ineos-led hierarchy.
