Over the past 18 months, Marcus Rashford has faced substantial scrutiny regarding his form on the pitch, with detractors questioning his ability to continue playing at the highest level for Manchester United.
While it is fair to discuss his recent struggles, it is crucial to paint a balanced picture that acknowledges his remarkable achievements as a footballer and human being.
His contributions to the club, his leadership off the field, and his positive impact on society at large cannot be dismissed.
Instead of focusing solely on his current form, we must also celebrate the inspiring individual behind the player – a man who has embodied resilience, determination, and empathy throughout his career.
Footballing Brilliance at Manchester United
Rashford’s journey with his beloved United began in February 2016, when a young, unknown academy player was thrust into the spotlight following an injury crisis.
Debuting against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League, the Wythenshawe man scored twice and followed it up with another brace against Arsenal just days later. From that moment, he cemented his place in the hearts of United fans as a precocious talent with boundless potential.
Since then, the attacker has become a stalwart in the team, scoring over 120 goals for the club. His pace, creativity, and instinctive finishing made him one of the Premier League’s most exciting forwards.
Throughout his career, Rashford has displayed a unique versatility, playing as a central striker, on the wings, or on the odd occasion even dropping deeper into playmaking roles when required.
This adaptability has made him a critical component of the team’s success, even in challenging periods.
The Englishman had a career-defining campaign during the 2019-2020 season, finishing as United’s top scorer and demonstrating newfound maturity in his game. His deadly combination of pace and power, combined with a more clinical touch in front of goal, earned him accolades from fans and pundits alike.
He ended with 22 goals and ten assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
Recent Struggles: A Player in Transition
To discuss Rashford’s recent dip in form without acknowledging the context behind it would be shortsighted.
Over the past 18 months, he has had to contend with injuries, a lack of consistent game time, and the never-ending changes to the ownership structure of the club.
His struggles are not uncommon for a player of his calibre, and they certainly do not reflect a lack of talent or desire.
Form in football is cyclical. Every great player, from Lionel Messi to Cristiano Ronaldo, has experienced periods where things didn’t click as they once did.
Whether it’s confidence issues, positional adjustments, or tactical shifts – these challenges are part of the natural evolution of a player. What stands out about Rashford, however, is his unwavering commitment to improvement.
He has acknowledged his difficulties, taken responsibility for his performances, and consistently worked hard to rediscover his best form.
For a player who has consistently carried the burden of expectation from such a young age, it is worth remembering that he has already achieved remarkable success.
While he may be going through a tough spell, his technical ability, football intelligence, and work ethic indicate that his resurgence is not a matter of if, but when.
Marcus Rashford, the Humanitarian
Rashford has emerged as one of the most influential young figures off the pitch, particularly for his tireless campaigning to combat child food poverty.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the player’s activism put him in the national spotlight for reasons unrelated to football. His personal experience of growing up in a single-parent household, reliant on free school meals, shaped his drive to make a difference for vulnerable children across the UK.
His campaign to extend free school meals during school holidays in England became a powerful moment of social change.
Through petitions, open letters, and conversations with policymakers, Rashford successfully pressured the UK government into providing food vouchers for children in need during the pandemic.
But, his work didn’t stop there—he partnered with major charities, raised millions in donations, and became the voice for many who had previously gone unheard. In recognition of his efforts, Rashford was awarded an MBE in 2020.
What makes his humanitarian efforts even more impressive is his humility. Despite the praise and accolades, he has remained focused on his cause, continuously working to expand his reach and inspire others.
Rashford’s “Full Time: A Game Plan for Life,” his debut book, further cements his role as an inspirational figure. The book, aimed at young people, focuses on developing resilience, kindness, and ambition—values that the man embodies on and off the pitch.
Leadership Beyond Football
The attacker’s impact transcends the sport he plays.
He has become a role model not just for aspiring footballers, but for young people around the world. His leadership has shown that success is not only measured by what you achieve professionally but also by how you use your platform to give back to the community.
His tireless advocacy for social justice, education, and child welfare demonstrates his deep sense of responsibility.
Rashford’s authenticity is perhaps his greatest asset. Despite being in the public eye from a young age, he has remained grounded, using his own experiences to shape his vision for a better world.
His work is not performative—he has lived the struggles that many of the children he advocates for continue to face. That lived experience gives him an unshakable connection to the people he helps, and it is this connection that has allowed him to rally the nation around his cause.
Redemption on the Horizon
Football is full of redemption stories, and Marcus Rashford’s career is far from being defined by his recent struggles.
His achievements, both on and off the pitch, show the character of a person who never backs down in the face of adversity. As he continues to work hard and rediscover his form, there is no doubt he will once again be one of Manchester United’s most crucial players.
It is also important to recognise that the forward is still only 26 years old, with many years of footballing excellence ahead of him.
His dip in form can be seen as part of the journey of every elite athlete, one that he is well-equipped to overcome.
His self-awareness, combined with his technical ability and determination, makes him a player worth believing in.
The Rashford Legacy
The Manchester lad has already built a legacy that extends far beyond Old Trafford.
As a footballer, he has thrilled fans with his electric pace, powerful shooting, and match-winning performances. But perhaps more significantly, he has redefined what it means to be a role model in the modern era.
By using his platform to fight for social justice, support children in need, and encourage education, Rashford has shown that footballers can be agents of change.
Criticism is part and parcel of professional sports, but his legacy will not be determined by fleeting moments of poor form.
Instead, it will be shaped by the totality of his contributions—on the pitch, where he has already achieved so much, and off it, where his impact continues to be felt across the country.
It is a story of resilience, empathy, and determination—a story far from over.
