Manchester United have enjoyed a busy period in the transfer market this summer, with three new signings already announced in the shape of Diego Leon, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.
At the time of writing, the North West giants are locked in talks with RB Leipzig over a potential move for 22-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko, with fellow Premier League rival Newcastle also firmly in the running for the Slovenian’s signature.
If United manage to pull off a deal for Sesko, they will have significantly bolstered their attacking ranks, with Cunha and Mbeumo also seen as big upgrades on last season’s personnel.
Whilst sales are still required, the Red Devils’ hierarchy will surely be well aware that they are still lacking somewhat in the middle of the park. Furthermore, Ruben Amorim is said to be on the lookout for an ‘athletic’ midfield player to fit his intricate system.
Christian Eriksen departed at the end of last season after his contract expired, whilst veteran star Casemiro will turn 34 during the upcoming campaign, leaving United with what one may perceive to be limited options in that department.
With that said, we profile five of the best central midfield options on the market today.
Carlos Baleba – Brighton & Hove Albion
The latest top talent from the Brighton conveyor belt, and, seemingly, the number one choice amongst many online Reds, Carlos Baleba.
The Seagulls have nurtured and flipped midfielders such as Yves Bissouma and Moises Caicedo for huge fees in recent years, and Baleba looks set to follow in a similar route.
The Cameroonian combines strength with excellent distribution and an outstanding ability to carry the ball forward through the lines with both grace and flair.
At just 21, Baleba’s ceiling is extremely high, but getting him out of Brighton could prove to be very difficult this summer. That is, if United are even considering it.
Adam Wharton – Crystal Palace
Adam Wharton is one of the most highly-rated young players in the Premier League following a stellar 18 months at Selhurst Park.
A deep-lying midfield playmaker, Wharton excels both offensively and defensively, and was superb as Palace won the FA Cup in May of this year.
United have been keen on the Blackburn native for a considerable time. Still, any potential transfer would again prove complicated, with the Londoners almost certain to demand top dollar for one of their most prized assets.
Injuries limited the Lancashire lad to just 20 league appearances last season. However, his talent is evident, with several big clubs around Britain and Europe interested in acquiring his services.
This may well be one to watch in 2026!
Lamine Camara – Monaco
Next on the list is AS Monaco midfield star Lamine Camara. The Senegal international is an industrious and energetic player who thrives in a deeper role.
The 21-year-old joined from fellow Ligue 1 outfit Metz in 2024 and has grown into a powerful presence in the engine room.
Although capable of progressing the play, the Senegalese has been noted for his accurate passing ability and creativity, which allows him to set the tempo in games.
Camara is also a threat from set-pieces and is something of a dead-ball specialist from free-kicks and corners.
The 5 ft 8 star would be a very shrewd purchase for a top club such as Manchester United this summer.
Lucien Agoume – Sevilla
Sevilla French midfield dynamo, Lucien Agoume, won plenty of plaudits for his impressive showings with the La Liga side throughout the 2024-25 campaign.
Standing at an imposing 6 ft 2, Agoume is known for his strong defensive capabilities, while also possessing a good passing range and an ability to read the game well.
The Cameroon-born star is more suited to the no.6 role, regularly showcasing strong tackling and interceptions as he shielded his defence.
At 23, the former Inter Milan player could well be eager to take the next step in his career, with his current deal in Seville set to expire in the summer of 2028.
It would certainly be a logical move if Ruben Amorim and Co. were to swoop for the Frenchman in this window, and he could prove to be a cheaper alternative than the other names on this list.
Javi Guerra – Valencia
Spanish starlet Javi Guerra is the latest talent to emerge at Mestalla, and has already been the subject of scrutiny this summer after drawn-out contract negotiations with his current club, Valencia.
The midfield machine has been linked with the likes of United, AC Milan and Aston Villa in recent weeks, despite not yet being a household name across Europe. However, the youngster possesses all the tools to become a top-level player.
Standing at 6 ft 1, Guerra is quite different to some of the playmakers who have come through at Valencia like David Silva, Juan Mata and Isco, all of whom were smaller in stature.
He is aggressive and physically strong, with athleticism, stamina and excellent shooting ability acting as his strongest attributes.
Atletico Madrid tried to sign the Gilet native in the past, but Valencia managed to keep hold of their star man. Los Che will surely be tempted to cash in at some point, with a rumoured fee of around €30m looking like a potential bargain.
Guerra is tipped for a bright future, and it’ll be interesting to see if a top side comes calling for this Iberian gem in the not-too-distant future.
Whether United move for a midfielder in this window remains to be seen, as they do appear well stocked in this area when looking at it on paper.
Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Toby Collyer and Sekou Kone will all be vying for a place in Amorim’s two-man midfield system.
Still, even so, it is widely accepted that the reds could do with at least one more reinforcement to improve the quality.
