Antony has sealed his desired summer move to Real Betis in a deal worth €25 million for Manchester United, plus a staggering 50% sell-on clause on any profit made from a future sale.
Having agreed a package in principle on Friday (Aug 29), issues arose regarding the nature of a multi-million pound salary reduction for the Brazilian, with both clubs unwilling to settle the difference.
However, with deadline day forcing the player’s hand, the 25-year-old opted to prioritise football and the advancement of his career, returning to Los Verdiblancos after a hugely successful loan spell during the second half of last season.
Crucially, despite receiving far less than anticipated for the winger, United will make no further payments, while also saving £5.5m on annual salary outgoings.
Antony accepts salary reduction to rejoin Betis
Having signed for United in August 2022 under the approval of then-manager Erik ten Hag, the former Ajax attacker enjoyed a thrilling start with goals in his first three Premier League outings.
But a dip in form coincided with a negative media backlash and injuries, resulting in an underwhelming debut campaign that yielded only four goals from 25 league appearances.
Things went from bad to worse the following season, with poor performances reducing his playing time and a lack of attacking threat leading to questions regarding his suitability for a more physically demanding division.
Inevitably, after falling out of favour in the North West, Antony was offered an opportunity on loan at Betis, where he recaptured his sparkling form with an array of breathtaking displays and game-winning contributions.
Under the guidance of Manuel Pellegrini, the Osasco native recorded nine goals and five assists in 26 appearances and was crucial in the side’s run to the Conference League final, where they were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea.
Although it has not gone to plan for Antony in England, nobody would begrudge the player for his time and efforts, and desire to further his career within a suitable division.
He rejoins a Betis side that has highlighted a distinct desire to ensure he would lead their attack for the foreseeable future, and everybody at the Theatre of Red wishes him the very best with the move.
