There’s a lot to be said about squad planning and recruitment for perennial competitiveness in the modern game.
When Manchester United spent an initial £66.3 million to sign Benjamin Sesko, it wasn’t about acquiring the best in world football today; it was paying for his potential.
Considered one of the brightest young forwards in Europe, the Slovenian broke through as a teenager at Red Bull Salzburg before embracing the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig.
After a slow start to his Old Trafford journey, questions arose about his long-term suitability for the Premier League’s demanding nature.
Nonetheless, the hitman did find his feet in the North West, coinciding with Ruben Amorim’s departure, the man who brought him to England.
Sesko’s fine form began in January when he bagged a brilliant brace against Burnley, before following up with another strike days later against Brighton in the FA Cup.
He found himself out of the starting XI under Michael Carrick, before making a significant impact off the bench against Fulham and West Ham, netting in stoppage time to enhance his reputation amongst the supporter base.
With the deftest of touches, Sesko nonchalantly scored to rescue a crucial point for United in East London, thus offering a glimpse of what he is truly capable of.
The execution of his finish against the Hammers was reminiscent of something that the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Dimitar Berbatov would routinely produce.
Inevitably, despite numerous narratives, Sesko ended his debut campaign with 12 goals and one assist from 32 appearances, averaging a contribution every 140 minutes.
Not so bad for a man that Tim Sherwood had publicly written off, and further evidence of his superstar potential.
Still only 23, the Radece native has frightening potential and ample room to blossom into the striking sensation that many have tipped him to become.
Standing at an imposing 6 ft 5, he possesses the physical stature required to lead a line in English football, alongside explosive pace, good work rate and solid link-up play.
With a strong second half of his maiden campaign to build on, he is doing well but has plenty of room to improve and grow as a player.
Undoubtedly, with his additional muscle and more top-flight experience, Sesko can become a shining light in the North West for a decade or more, and there are very few who can deny this today.
Influenced by Director of Recruitment, Christopher Vivell, the Reds battled hard to get their man ahead of Newcastle last summer, whilst Arsenal plumped for the more experienced Viktor Gyokeres instead.
Interestingly, it wasn’t the first time United flirted with the idea of luring Sesko to M16, either.
In the summer of 2022, Erik ten Hag’s side sought to bring in an alternative option to the ageing Cristiano Ronaldo and injury-prone Anthony Martial. Sesko was viewed as a viable candidate.
The 22-year-old was playing in Austria at the time, and, despite interest from some of the biggest clubs on the continent, opted to join Leipzig on a Pre-contract agreement ahead of a €24m transfer the following summer (2023).
In his eyes, this was the sensible move and something he viewed as a stepping stone in his fledgling career.
If you delve even further back, United had the opportunity to bring Sesko to Manchester when he was just 15.
Allegedly, the 20-time English champions could have secured their future striker in 2018 for a lowly £2m fee, but the then-hierarchy were only prepared to fork out half of that.
His career in England may have taken time to ignite, but Benjamin appears to be on the verge of something very special.
Unsurprisingly, public opinion may have been a tad quieter had he moved 30 miles west, but Mancunian expectations are always inflated.
Confidence is the most powerful asset for any player, and with nine goals from 15 Premier League appearances in 2026, we are but scratching the surface.
Say what you will about unrealistic expectations, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Galactico-level forward emerging to lead the line at Old Trafford for years to come.
