Manchester United played out an entertaining 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday afternoon in what was the fourth of six scheduled pre-season outings.
Michael Carrick named a strong starting XI, hoping to maintain the performances and attacking intent on display against Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid.
It appeared as though that would be the case from the outset, as his side began with an evident desire to leave a lasting impression.
Regardless, PSG dismissed the strong entrance inside two minutes when Ibrahim Mbaye put the finishing touches on a sweeping French counter-attack for the European champions.
The talented 18-year-old glided past the outstretched leg of Ayden Heaven, calmly slotting past a helpless Tom Heaton from five yards.
Undeterred, the Reds responded confidently and controlled the majority of exchanges thereafter, routinely threatening through some exquisite passages of intricate interplay.
Say what you will about the pleasant nature of summer spectacles, but we are beginning to witness Carrick’s possession-oriented template come to fruition.
Those in attendance shared a juncture of apprehension when Tyler Fletcher replaced Mason Mount after 20 minutes, with the former withdrawn for precautionary measures after a robust challenge.
Given the tempestuous response to a lack of transfer activity in the North West, followers will be eager for updates regarding the former Chelsea man’s fitness.
Mount’s teammates were unfazed, though, and deservedly drew level through Bryan Mbeumo. The Cameroonian continued his fine pre-season form with a low-driven effort following Amad’s impressive buildup.
Carrick opted for a brace of changes at the break, introducing Diogo Dalot and Leny Yoro in place of Heaven and the returning Noussair Mazraoui in defence.
Much to his surprise, Dermot Mee joined them moments later, replacing Heaton in goals after the latter pulled up in discomfort following an overextension.
Mbeumo appears to have reclaimed much of his confidence in the final third after a challenging couple of months, bringing the best out of Matvey Safonov with a brace of impressive efforts during a good showing.
Additionally, those in attendance were treated to a first summer sighting of Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans for the final 30 minutes, bringing a sizeable contingent of the Ullevi Stadium to its feet.
But for all of the entertainment of the first half, the second 45 felt every inch of a routine summer exhibition, with neither side truly pushing the tempo.
Jack Fletcher offered glimpses of his potential on the right, as did Shea Lacey on the opposite flank, with both crafting half opportunities in the final quarter.
To their credit, United limited a strong Paris side to very little throughout, even after Joao Neves and Vitinha’s arrival, and we witnessed a small sample of Tielemans’s meticulous orchestral tendencies from deep.
Gothenburg received an assured showing from the Premier League side, with plenty to take from a squad that appears to be bursting with energy and conviction, despite missing several first-team names.
Furthermore, the sight of Mount walking unaided and without concern, then happily interacting with those outside the ground, was the cherry on the cake ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Dublin.
“Looking forward to it,” Carrick stated ahead of the Croke Park outing with Leeds. “It’s been a little bit of different chapters through pre-season.
“But to get everybody together when we get to Dublin over the next couple of days, it’ll be great. Two more games this week, and again, looking forward to seeing the group develop.
“I think today, the boys coming off the bench towards the end add that bit of quality coming back from the World Cup. Top, top players, it was nice to have them back, and we get more back next week.
“So, yeah, we’re in a good place.”
