After a disenchanted Manchester United fan base enjoyed a promising start to the summer transfer window, progress has slowed somewhat in recent weeks, with the future of Bryan Mbeumo remaining unclear.
The Red Devils were quick off the mark when they confirmed the purchase of Matheus Cunha from Wolves on June 1, triggering the former Atletico Madrid star’s £62.5 million release clause.
Following on from the signing of the 26-year-old, the North West giants saw an opening bid of £45m + £10m in add-ons for Brentford’s Mbeumo rejected days later.
Undeterred by the rebuff, United recalculated before submitting an improved offer of more than £60m, including add-ons, which the Bees again declined.
Inevitably, this was met with frustration and bemusement by the United faithful, with many calling for the club to walk away immediately from the protracted saga, as progress had stalled in recent weeks.
However, as recently stated by Theatre of Red editor Shaun Connolly, United remain confident that a deal will indeed be done, with ample belief in an agreement before the squad heads off on their pre-season tour of America.
Why Manchester United are insisting on Bryan Mbeumo
It is no secret that the 20-time English champions struggled in front of goal last season, hitting the net just a meagre 44 times in the Premier League alone.
Admittedly, the Old Trafford outfit lacked the required personnel to utilise Ruben Amorim’s intricate system to its full potential.
In response, the attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony are all likely to move on this summer, and, in any case, they either lack sufficient physicality or don’t offer the suitability for a specific role that the Portuguese tactician deploys.
Enter Mbeumo, and the thought process that he would excel when played in a right-sided forward role, having enjoyed a career-best 20 goals and seven assists in the Premier League.
The Cameroonian offers invaluable robustness, having not missed a single league outing across the 2024-25 campaign. Furthermore, he is unquestionably direct, fast and skilful, which is an exciting mix for United fans to embrace.
Despite being a left-footed forward, he isn’t shy about using his right, which could make him an ideal foil for a wing-back such as Amad Diallo down the flank, offering a nice balance to the side.
By nature, Mbeumo is versatile and hardworking, and would transition seamlessly into Amorim’s style of play. He established himself as one of the top finishers in the Premier League last season, and that type of quality has been sorely missing at the Theatre of Dreams.
The former Troyes man loves driving into space and delivering crosses into treacherous areas. That in itself would improve United’s blunt final third presence and even enhance the output of someone like Rasmus Hojlund.
Interestingly, the Gtech talisman struck up a fine partnership with Yoane Wissa over the past few years, even demonstrating a capability of filling in as a central striker when called upon.
From set-piece threat to ball-carrying ability and an unyielding desire for goals, Bryan Mbeumo would supply an invaluable asset for this side to inherit at a critical stage of an Ineos rebuild.
Although negotiations remain ongoing between United and Brentford, the Reds are hopeful of finally sealing the deal and securing what they consider to be a game-changing player.
