Manchester United lost 1-0 to top-four chasing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their penultimate Premier League outing on Friday evening.
It was the Red Devils’ 18th league defeat of the campaign, but truthfully, the visitors deserved more from their trip to West London.
Marc Cucurella bagged the game’s only goal when he decisively headed past Andre Onana on 71 minutes to give Chelsea a lead they would not surrender.
Ruben Amorim’s men were the better side in the first half and had a goal ruled out when Harry Maguire was adjudged offside following a VAR intervention.
United now turn their attention to the Europa League final against Tottenham on Wednesday, offering them a route back into the Champions League despite a dismal domestic season.
Here are our five talking points from a tight battle at the Bridge.
Amorim names a strong Manchester United XI against Chelsea
United head coach Ruben Amorim started a strong line-up on Friday night for his team’s final outing before the Europa League showpiece on May 21.
The Portuguese tactician will hope the run-out proves to be a valuable assignment in keeping his stars sharp ahead of their pivotal meeting at the San Mames Stadium.
The Lisbon natives’ approach could not have differed more from Spurs counterpart Ange Postecoglou, who chose to rest his heavy-hitters in their defeat at Villa Park.
Thankfully, Amorim’s troops seemed to come through the game unscathed with no fresh injury concerns to report at the time of writing.
That is at least one pleasing aspect to take away from the game on Friday evening.
United have now gone two months without a league win
Almost unbelievably, it was the Reds’ eighth game in the Premier League without a victory.
You have to go back to March 16 for the last time the Mancunian outfit earned three points, a 3-0 win against Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
Whilst the 20-time English champions have been prioritising the Europa League virtually since April, it is a horrific statistic, whatever way you look at it.
Their last game of the season is against high-flying Aston Villa at Old Trafford, and there is a possibility the hosts will not earn another league victory this term.
Blunt attack costs United again
It was a fairly decent performance from the away team, especially in the opening half at Stamford Bridge.
However, despite having the ball in the net and creating some good openings, the visitors didn’t have enough in attack to truly hurt the Blues’ defence.
Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo tried their best to carve out some chances, but more often than not, the opportunities came to nothing and play would invariably break down again.
Rasmus Hojlund is struggling to lead the line, with no other out-and-out alternative presently available.
Heaven returns from injury
There was a welcome addition to United’s bench against the Pensioners as Ayden Heaven was listed amongst the visiting substitutes.
The 18-year-old sustained a serious-looking injury in March during the aforementioned win at Leicester. Despite proving to be a less worrisome knock than first feared, he later suffered a setback in his recovery, thus ruling him out for a little longer.
The former Arsenal prospect came on for the closing stages on Friday night to a chorus of applause and deserved recognition.
After an impressive start to his United career, it is certainly great to see the defender back in action again to bolster Amorim’s options.
All eyes are firmly cast on Bilbao
And so, everything comes down to Wednesday’s monumental clash against domestic rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.
There is so much riding on the game, not least a place in European football’s most prestigious club competition, but also the glory of winning a trophy and giving the fans something to celebrate at the end of a difficult campaign.
Amorim will have some late decisions as he ponders his starting XI, with the fitness of defensive duo Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt still unclear.
The former Sporting CP boss insisted that he prefers to keep his players fine-tuned and playing as many minutes as possible in the lead-up to the final, and he certainly achieved this against Chelsea.
