Criticism, critique, and surgical analysis are inherent in football. But, for Manchester United, the promise of daily attacks is the expectation despite the inevitable ramifications for player confidence and performance.
In what has become the most arbitrary of talking points amongst subsections of supporters, clear-cut cases of mentally drained footballers consume daily news.
Laboriously followed social media accounts are glorified for downright abusive statements before the narrative shifts to an apparent lack of understanding about why an individual is visibly struggling on the field.
Truthfully, there is a higher expectation for success for all employed staff at Old Trafford, and a global fanbase demands a return to the glory days.
However, an inability to accept that this success will not occur in a few short months inevitably generates a sense of frustration and negativity. Following that, mainstream media is more than happy to grasp onto any form of relatable clickbait.
Contrary to the dated ramblings of several familiar faces across some well-known sources, it is not as straightforward as clicking your heels together and asking for better results.
Remember, this football club possess a deep-rooted cancer tangled among the very fabric of its historic foundations. These players, well-paid or not, must attempt to maximise their confidence within an inherently toxic environment.
Bizarrely, individuals then appear surprised when the likes of Antony could thrive in alternative surroundings.
The art of disregarding confidence for a Manchester United click
From the outside, it is easy to point a finger at many of the Manchester United squad and deem them essential contributors to the current predicament.
But this group is an amalgamation of several philosophies in the North West, led by a head coach attempting to defuse multiple fires simultaneously.
Everybody accepts the damage caused by two decades of Glazer family mismanagement. So, why do the same individuals struggle to understand that poor weekly performances are a byproduct of this neglect?
Marcus Rashford is the prime example in 2025. Regularly lamented for lacking care, desire and understanding, many acknowledged his departure as the correct decision for all parties.
However, a little over two months after his move to Aston Villa, revisionism surfaced within ample sectors, and a seemingly perplexed collection of armchair experts are left scratching their heads about his upturn in form.
Similarly with Antony and his Real Betis excursion, the troubled Brazilian rediscovered his sparkling Ajax state within weeks of his arrival. So much so that Ramon Alarcon is determined to retain his services beyond the 2024-25 campaign.
I assure you, there is no magic involved here. It is simply the result of talented footballers being removed from the daily torment of media and social parasites, inadvertently allowing their confidence to flourish.
With just 25 appearances to his name, 19-year-old Leny Yoro became the latest victim of mainstream media.
Despite having to overcome an unsettling injury before attempting to come to terms with the melting pot that is Old Trafford, a former goalscorer who spent five years underwhelming as a youngster decided to use his platform for unnecessary critique.
But, in reality, this is nothing new.
Who could forget the daily segments comparing a relatively inexperienced Rasmus Hojlund against Erling Haaland before the Dane even took to the field?
For those unaware, this is pre-positioning an agenda, and individuals sit around tables deciphering the best way to squeeze as much traction out of this topic as is humanly possible.
Forget the fact that this is a teenager; focus on the colour of his jersey.
Amusingly, despite overcoming the initial ridicule and affliction, Hojlund did settle and rivalled his Scandinavian opponent throughout the second half of his debut campaign.
But the price tag paid and an inability to lead a dysfunctional unit out of the ground at 21 is enough to fuel a social agenda, and what we see today is a young man, devoid of any confidence, attempting to rekindle a semblance of form.
Admittedly, I believe he was ill-advised in speaking in a particular interview, but why should a collective disdain for one individual pass to the player afterwards?
The Theatre of Red was advised in April that the club is considering sending the player back to Italy on loan, in an attempt to remove him from his toxic state and aid in a return to form.
But this harsh criticism is not reserved solely for Rasmus. He is one of many recipients in the North West.
A culmination of everything covered was highlighted in a December outing against Newcastle when Joshua Zirkzee walked off the Old Trafford field after 31 minutes to a chorus of boos.
Consider that this was the reigning Serie A Young Player of the Year after only four months of acclimatising to a new team, league, country and lifestyle inside the toxic bowl of Manchester United.
With respect, how could any player possess anything resembling confidence in that dressing room? I certainly would not be keen on going to work with the knowledge of what could happen if I underperform.
As sure as day will turn to night, Manchester United will generate traction for the media and those attempting to maximise the profit of a blue tick from their mobile phone.
However, as supporters, the 20-time English champions are encountering attacks on the age-old tradition of ‘us against the rest’.
Regardless of personal opinion on a footballer, whether he should be in Manchester or if his weekly salary is vindication for abuse, I assure you that these people thrive on supporter confidence.
How can you expect a better result if you continue to flog a dead horse?
