Amidst a barrage of notable issues and talking points at Manchester United, the left-back position ranks highly on the list for sporting director Dan Ashworth.
Although long-term absentees Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are closing in on a return, the lack of a recognised option has left many bewildered.
Last season’s player of the season, Diogo Dalot, has deputised throughout the campaign, often criticised for his inability to provide a stellar performance.
When considering the lack of options for Erik ten Hag, the sale of Alvaro Fernandez left many frustrated during the summer.
However, a series of impressive displays have attracted the attention of Barcelona and Real Madrid, with Ashworth reportedly considering the buy-back option for the Spaniard.
Should United move quickly to rectify a potential mistake?
At 21, Fernandez has taken to Portuguese football like a duck to water, displaying impressive weekly performances and earning regular plaudits across the league.
He has made seven appearances for Benfica this season, with national publications claiming As Águias have finally found their Alejandro Grimaldo successor.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo states the 20-time English champions are monitoring his development – with a buy-back for the defender under consideration.
His star is well-appreciated in England, with United chiefs reluctantly signing off on his sale due to the emergence of Harry Amass and internal medical reports which offered positive news on Shaw and Malacia.
But, given the obvious talents of the youngster, Old Trafford officials were insistent on securing a clause to future-proof the departure.
Fernandez has played a notable role in his side’s unbeaten start in the Champions League, alongside their climb to third place in the domestic standings.
Given his impressive start and the likelihood of continued growth and recognition across the continent, it remains unclear how long Benfica will be able to retain its star.
