The Manchester United faithful endured another traumatic outing with a 3-0 Premier League defeat against their City rivals at the Etihad Stadium.
Goals from Phil Foden and a brace from the ever-powerful Erling Haaland delivered a telling blow to Ruben Amorim and a dejected travelling contingent.
Pep Guardiola couldn’t hide his smile at the final whistle, embracing the adulation of the home support with another memorable showing in the Manchester derby.
In contrast, Sir Jim Ratcliffe looked bemused as the players departed the field, with plenty of questions to be answered by Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox.
Despite recent signs of progression, the 20-time champions of England have not won in seven away league fixtures, with the last road victory coming against Leicester on March 16.
Another day to forget for Ruben Amorim and Manchester United
Rivalries aside, everyone in attendance shared a moment of appreciation for boxing great Ricky Hatton, as the former world champion passed away at the age of 46.
Despite the back-and-forth generated by clickbait-oriented outlets, the Manchester derby holds significant local importance, with everything from households to workplaces pushing for the bragging rights.
Amorim is determined to transform the fortunes of a one-time perennial juggernaut through a calculated approach and a meticulous tactical philosophy. In contrast, Guardiola is aiming to banish any naysayers who suggest the game is passing him by.
With several high-profile names missing due to injury, both men named a strong starting XI, with Noussair Mazraoui returning from the opening whistle following several weeks on the sidelines.
The opening exchanges were expectedly frantic, with Haaland threatening within the opening 30 seconds, before Benjamin Sesko drew the first save from Gianluigi Donnarumma moments later.
United settled well and looked the better of the sides throughout the opening quarter, epitomised by an ambitious, acrobatic Amad effort following a fine attacking passage.
However, as is often the case, the Reds fell behind against the run of play thanks to Foden, following a fine run and delivery from Jeremy Doku.
Inevitably, the home crowd responded, and City turned the screw in an attempt to double their lead. United remained resolute and threatening in transition and often impressive when dictating a high press.
Neither manager opted to alter their sides for the restart, with the visitors installing increased urgency from the off. Notably, Haaland contributed four defensive clearances within two minutes of a promising red assault.
Still, as in the first half, City benefited from individual errors and doubled their lead through Haaland, before he inexplicably hit the post from four yards out, after creating an empty net.
Bryan Mbeumo brought the very best out of Donnarumma with a sublime half volley on the hour mark, drawing a remarkable fingertip save from the veteran Italian.
In response, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire entered the game within seconds, replacing Mazraoui and Leny Yoro in a reshuffled structure.
As Amorim’s men piled forward and upped their tempo, Haaland grabbed his second and City’s third when he broke from deep to calmly slot past a visibly nervous Altay Bayindir.
To their credit, Bruno Fernandes and Co. kept their heads high and pushed forward at will. But much like an expert counter-puncher, the home side repelled every attacking attempt and threatened regularly in transition, squandering several efforts to add a fourth.
Late chances for Mbeumo and Casemiro might have altered the dynamic of a highly charged affair, but, much like the majority of last season, the 20-time English champions couldn’t find a finishing touch.
With an Old Trafford outing against Chelsea next on the agenda, United have suffered their second defeat in four following an opening-day disappointment against Arsenal.
Worryingly, Amorim has managed just eight wins from 31 Premier League fixtures and will undoubtedly face a wave of criticism and speculation in the days to come.
As a growing contingent of an angry and bewildered supporter base has seen enough, we shall discover how adamant Ineos is about adhering to their plans.
