Another day presents another transfer exclusive in the world of Manchester United, with Adam Wharton the latest name mentioned alongside a £60 million fee.
That’s according to Jeremy Cross, who suggests the 20-time English champions are plotting a “shock” raid for the Crystal Palace star, with a consensus building about his Champions League capabilities.
Now, United’s interest in the former Blackburn academy graduate is not breaking news; this has been common knowledge for quite some time. Still, the prospect of a January punt has supplied a glimmer of giddiness amongst the fanbase.
Ruben Amorim continues to fine-tune his principles at Old Trafford, with the midfield presenting an area of keen focus within the framework of an Ineos-led recruitment project.
Given the obvious requirements for a particular profile and eye-watering transfer fee, could Wharton supply the solution to a central dilemma which has plagued the Stretford End since Michael Carrick hung up his boots?
Is Adam Wharton ready to shoulder the weight of expectation at Manchester United?
First and foremost, unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for a considerable period, you’ll be well aware of the talent and footballing IQ this boy possesses.
Whether tasked with receiving the ball deep before transitioning from defence to attack, or dictating his side’s tempo, having dispossessed an opponent, Wharton is a fine example of a complete midfield athlete.
Despite his youth and relative experience at the highest level, we are dissecting a full England international who has led his side to FA Cup glory against Manchester City.
However, at 21, and yet to be truly exposed to the expectations of a worldwide juggernaut, a fee that could climb close to £100m requires careful consideration.
Truthfully, the romantic in me sees a potential partnership with Kobbie Mainoo as one that could spark a United revolution for the next decade.
Given their obvious abilities, a combination of technical bravado and defensive tenacity represents a footballing Yin and yang which could serve Amorim with a league-leading duo.
But at the tender ages of 20 and 21, there are ample reservations about the mental fortitude to shoulder the inevitable media trauma that goes hand in hand with the famous red shirt.

| Key Passes | 1.78 – 81st | 2.20 – 90th |
| Progressive Passes | 7.31 – 93rd | 5.39 – 58th |

| Touches | 59.54 – 59th | 48.29 – 14th |
Ability-wise, there is no question about his mastery, but there has been a slight metamorphosis at Selhurst Park, which has seen Wharton become less involved in his general play.
That comes hand in hand with the exodus of key individuals, and should not be used as a stick to beat the player with, particularly following starring performances against the likes of Liverpool.
It’s easy to make a case for the pursuit of a potential star with ample room for growth, and we will never truly determine his ability to silence expectations until he walks into the cauldron.
Still, if Amorim can obtain a starlet of this calibre to integrate into an already technical squad, Project 150 will creep a little closer for some.
How would you feel about Adam Wharton making the move to Manchester United, and would you prefer him to the likes of Carlos Baleba or Lucien Agoume?
