At 18, Paraguayan talent Diego Leon represents a glimpse into the future of Ineos’s transfer strategy at Manchester United.
Boasting an athletic arsenal with an abundance of explosive capabilities, the Cerro Porteno starlet embodies so much of the modern full-back, from his impressive strength to his unyielding desire to terrorise the opposition’s final third.
Naturally, he is far from the finished article in his juvenile form, and the demanding nature of the English game will supply an altogether challenging task.
But, as with any emerging talent in the North West, Carrington will provide the tools and the ammunition for this youngster to prevail. The rest, as they say, is down to his will and desire to succeed at the highest level.
Diego Leon and embracing the expectation at Manchester United
For far too long, United’s South American scouting network has been neglected by idle ownership, with a painful list of talented players passing through the fingers of Mancunian possibilities.
In Leon, we are witnessing the fruits of a proficient team of scouts coming to the fore, similar to the advanced interest in Argentinian starlet Franco Mastantuono.
Fresh off the back of the opening goal in a 3-1 Primera Division victory against Recoleta, Leon turned in a 72-minute display during his 7th appearance of the domestic campaign.
Internationally, he is a regular feature for the Paraguay under-20 side that finished fourth in the 2025 South American Youth Football Championship, scoring in a memorable 3-2 victory against Argentina in February.
While all has not been plain sailing, and he has incurred the wrath of many El Ciclon, the youngster’s abilities are evident with each passing display, and his growth potential is the most exciting facet of this deal.
Roberto Arce (59) is a lifelong supporter of the 34-time Primera Division champions, and he believes the full-back can succeed in the Premier League if given the necessary time and patience.
“Look, we’re not silly; we know the level is much higher in England,” Roberto told Shaun Connolly.
“We like this player. He’s sometimes reckless and has generated some negativity among the fans. But he cares, he tries, and his talent is growing.
“Will he make it? Who knows. Do I think he can succeed in Europe? Of course! Strong, fast, and athletic. It’s what you’d expect from a modern defender. But, he requires time and understanding – he is still learning.
“Unlike some, I wish him the best in Manchester.”
Ruben Amorim desires athletic footballers to match his comprehensive system. The signing of Patrick Dorgu represented a glance into the Portuguese tactician’s mindset, and there are many similarities with young Diego.
He is a versatile player who has already highlighted a notable skillset as a member of a back four and in a wing-back setup. Despite his age, his dogged tenacity returns a surprising physical advantage against many older opponents.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has tasked his best-in-class unit to acquire the most promising talents in the market with financially savvy deals to benefit the structure in the North West.
Following in the footsteps of Chido Obi and Sekou Kone, the 18-year-old possesses promise, talent, and a cutting edge that helps him stand out from the crowd. Additionally, given his humble background, the allure of this move is not lost on him.
“It’s a dream come true (to join Manchester United), and I thank my family and everyone of O’Leary,” Leon stated during celebrations following news of his Premier League deal.
Like any move, nothing is a guarantee for any player. The Old Trafford faithful have witnessed the capitulation of several multi-million-pound arrivals in recent seasons.
However, with a meagre fee of £3.3 million and a further £820,000 in achievable add-ons, this represents another shrewd acquisition with massive potential and limited downside.
Like Roberto, I have confidence in the player and his ability to shine on the grandest stage. Additionally, the allure of further South American arrivals offers a tantalising prospect.
