Manuel Ugarte remains a high priority for Erik ten Hag as the Manchester United chief aims to bolster his midfield.
The Paris Saint-Germain man offers a unique skillset to accommodate his squad, with many viewing a potential acquisition as the final piece of a productive summer jigsaw.
Having long expressed his desire for a move to England, the North West outfit has already agreed on a suitable salary and contractual details for the tenacious Uruguayan.
Ten Hag’s interest should come as no surprise, with French powerhouse L’Équipe previously labelling the player a ‘revelation’ – emphasising his necessity to balance the Ligue 1 Champions structure.
But, as is often the case, the European powerhouses are struggling to agree on a suitable transfer fee, with the Guardian claiming United are willing to play the long game to force the Parisian’s hand.
A modern midfield monster
Friday evening’s Premier League victory against Fulham saw veteran midfielder Casemiro deliver a reminder of the quality he possesses.
However, while the Brazilian can play a role during a crucial season, Ten Hag desires a youthful player to accommodate Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in a dynamic trio.
Ugarte – an unknown variable to many – is the definition of a midfield monster with an elite skillset to aid in unlocking Mainoo’s attacking capabilities.
The PSG man made 37 appearances throughout 2023-24, averaging 2.32 tackles and 1.86 interceptions per 90 minutes played, ranking in the 97th percentile across Europe.
Additionally, his work rate off the ball was staggering – achieving 8.14 ball recoveries, 5.97 tackles/interceptions and 4.3 dribblers challenged per outing.
The 23-year-old offers a battle-hardened defensive mentality with an elite engine and the required physicality to compete in England’s top tier.
Under the guidance of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United have cultivated a new-look approach to transfer negotiations.
The days of folding to the demands of rival clubs are long gone, with United willing to wait until the final minutes of the window to seal a suitable deal.
Per the Guardian, outgoings are not a dependent factor in financing a deal, although a £51m valuation is too dear for Dan Ashworth and Co.
Sources close to the Theatre of Red have confirmed growing confidence in concluding a deal, with an assured stance that the French champions desire completion.
