On a day when the famous Manchester United academy contends for a place in the FA Youth Cup Final, Michael Carrick is plotting for a challenging London test without four first-team defenders.
His side will face a potentially season-defining outing at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea on Saturday, with both teams fighting for Champions League qualification.
It’s fair to say that Carrick has encountered his share of criticism following a jaded defeat to Leeds. Although the Reds remain well-positioned in the Premier League, confidence appears to be diminishing in pockets of support.
United currently possess a seven-point lead over sixth-placed Chelsea, but suspensions compound existing injury concerns within an already-fragile squad.
Nonetheless, Liam Rosenior is under intense pressure following five defeats in his previous six fixtures, and a further setback could prove costly for the 41-year-old tactician.

Frustratingly, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are both absent through suspension for this crucial trip down south.
Maguire was handed an additional game’s ban following his dismissal at Bournemouth, while his Argentinian teammate will miss three fixtures after his controversial red card on Monday.
Carrick is disappointed, and rightfully so, but is remaining focused on the task at hand. “To be honest, there’s not much we can react to,” he stated on Friday.
“Massively disappointed, of course. I think quite a few reasons to be disappointed in a big way over those types of situations over the last three weeks.
“But, obviously, now we’ve got to move on, the decisions have been made, it’s something that we’re really disappointed with in many ways, but that’s it now. We’ve got to move on, and we will do.”
Adding insult to an already precarious situation, Leny Yoro collected an injury in training and did not travel with the squad.
The Frenchman joins long-term absentee Matthijs de Ligt on the Physio’s table, meaning Ayden Heaven is the sole remaining senior option in central defence.
Regardless, Carrick was quick to praise the efforts and potential of his England Under-20 international.
“I think Ayden’s in a good place,” he said. “Well, I know he’s in a good place. He’s obviously still young, and he’s progressing through the early stages of his career, so I think it’s pretty natural for him to play some games and maybe not some others.
“He’s training really well, he’s learning, he’s listening, he wants to improve. So, I think it’s pretty natural for a centre-half of his age; he’s probably well ahead of schedule in terms of the games that he’s played.
“He’s trained well, I’ve got no worries. He went away and played with England a couple of weeks ago and done well, so yeah, [he’s] looking forward to the game, for sure.”
Patrick Dorgu continues on the road to recovery, but Kobbie Mainoo has progressed well, and Carrick confirmed a decision will be made about his involvement on the day.
United enjoyed a 2-1 victory when the sides met at Old Trafford in September, with first-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro earning the three points for Ruben Amorim.
Still, Stamford Bridge has proven a troublesome hunting ground in recent years for the travelling Reds.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the last United manager to leave London with a win six years ago. Ironically, Maguire netted the second in a 2-0 triumph.
If ever there was a moment for the visitors to complete a league double over their old rivals, now is the time.
