Having seemingly postponed a potential move for Carlos Baleba, Manchester United are evaluating their options ahead of the final weeks of a busy summer window, with Sevilla starlet Lucien Agoume a player of significant interest.
Ruben Amorim endured the narrowest of defeats following a largely promising opening weekend display against Arsenal, and the former Sporting chief has remained tight-lipped about further transfer activity in the North West.
The acquisitions of Diego Leon, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko signified a much-needed show of intent ahead of a crucial Premier League campaign. Still, many feel that the midfield requires concentration.
With Brighton intent on retaining the services of Baleba until next summer, an Ineos-led hierarchy has been weighing up the possibility of adding additional steel ahead of a season of redemption at Old Trafford.
At 23, Agoume is one of several shortlisted options that have aroused curiosity with a blend of physically domineering attributes that complement an ever-growing arsenal of technical strengths.
Furthermore, our sources advise that intermediaries have moved towards establishing building blocks, with a view to offering the player to United.
But, as an unproven option in Engnald’s top tier, does the French U21 star possess the required skillset and mentality to hack the undeniable sense of expectations that come hand in hand with marshalling a Manchester United midfield?
Can Lucien Agoume star as a Manchester United midfield general?
For those unaware, Amorim’s intricate philosophy requires athletic individuals who are commanding in and out of possession, with the ability to dominate spatial awareness to regain control.
At 6 ft 2, Agoume is an all-action defensive midfielder whose style disrupts opposition transitions with potency, tactical positioning and a promising hint of that required Premier League grit.
Despite his height and stature, the former Sochaux talent is ferociously nimble, demonstrating a surprising burst of acceleration when required and an ability to turn on a sixpence, resembling many of the characteristics of Yaya Toure.
However, how does he compare with Baleba in terms of their ability to stamp authority on a midfield partnership and to offset the opposition?
| Domestic metrics 2024-25 | Lucien Agoume (per 90 / percentile) | Carlos Baleba (per 90 / percentile) |
| Interceptions | 1.75 / 98th | 1.56 / 91st |
| % of dribblers tackled | 69.2% / 98th | 60.0% / 84th |
| Tackles middle third | 1.58 / 97th | 1.25 / 70th |
| Tackles | 2.98 / 93rd | 2.67 / 70th |
| Aerials won | 1.79 / 91st | 1.32 / 79th |
| Ball recoveries | 5.79 / 88th | 6.66 / 91st |
| Shots blocked | 0.47 / 87th | 0.37 / 59th |
| Passes blocked | 0.68 / 74th | 1.22 / 84th |
Undeniably, while both offer a formidable array of defensive qualities to complement a more attack-minded partner, Agoume has excelled in these attributes, albeit La Liga does not offer the same level of physicality as the Premier League.
As is common knowledge, the role of the central player has evolved over the years, and even a defensive-minded individual must be well-versed in connecting play through effective distribution and ball-carrying.
Furthermore, acting as a stable press-resistant unit to receive possession from the defence and transition the football into the middle and attacking thirds is an invaluable quality for any championship-minded outfit.
| Domestic metrics 2024-25 | Lucien Agoume (per 90 / percentile) | Carlos Baleba (per 90 / percentile) |
| Successful take-on % | 73.3% / 97th | 57.9% / 87th |
| Progressive passing distance | 232.45 / 81st | 95.04% / 73rd |
| Passes into the final third | 5.36 / 80th | 3.69 / 49th |
| Progressive passes | 5.75 / 76th | 3.99 / 43rd |
| Touches | 63.05 / 74th | 57.40 / 46th |
| Through balls | 0.26 / 71st | 0.24 / 61st |
| Key passes | 1.15 / 62nd | 0.71 / 33rd |
| Carries | 29.33 / 50th | 32.84 / 58th |
Again, the differing domestic competitions will add to the contrasting figures above, but Agoume once more appears to hold an edge over the Brighton star.
It is worth noting that while the Sevilla man attempts more than eight passes per 90 minutes (52.62 | 44.44), Baleba performs better with a pass completion of 87.4% compared to 81.5%.
Perhaps the most notable talking point when considering a move for either player is the transfer fee that each will likely command.
Baleba’s stock has grown considerably since his £23.5 million move from Lille in August 2023, with the 21-year-old expected to fetch more than £100m.
In contrast, Agoume is available for a fee of £34.5m under a release clause in his contract, with Los Nervionenses eager to offload first-team players to raise funds after a humbling 17th-place domestic finish in 2024-25.
As Amorim continues to finetune his tactical principles ahead of a weekend trip to Craven Cottage, Ineos have a crucial decision to make regarding its next investment.
Bruno Fernandes will continue to grow into his new withdrawn role, while the trio of Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte offer an alternative option as his partner.
The question for many Manchester United supporters is how far this team can progress without a defensive star like Baleba at its heart.
Nothing is a certainty in football, and the transition from continental leagues has proven difficult for many Premier League newcomers. Still, Lucien Agoume is developing his game and offers a wealth of talent and potential for a third of the price.
