The prospect of Scott McTominay sealing an Italian transfer has intensified with news that Giovanni Manna has flown to England for talks regarding the midfield star.
Alongside Antonio Conte, the Napoli director is determined to seal a deal for the Manchester United player, with the Scottish International in demand throughout the Summer.
According to reports in the Athletic, the possibility of an agreement to take McTominay to Gli Azzurri has edged closer, with progression in a deal occurring during the visit.
The versatile midfielder has also attracted attention at home, with Fulham failing to agree on a price with United after three attempts.
Marco Silva appears to have turned his attention elsewhere, with the Cottagers reportedly close to sealing a deal for Sander Berge.
Profit and Sustainability
As previously outlined in a comprehensive report by the Theatre of Red, Manchester United are fighting a precarious financial battle.
The nature of Profit and Sustainability (PSR) in the Premier League dictates a requirement to monitor expenditure annually.
In short, clubs can lose a maximum of £105 million over three seasons – or £35m per season – on a rolling basis. While there are deductibles to consider, United’s three-year loss figure currently stands at £271.4m.
That takes us to the highly-sought Manuel Ugarte.
The Paris Saint-Germain battler is a priority target for the Reds, with the player requesting the French outfit to accept an offer.
PSG are willing to sell the Uruguayan midfielder but are intent on recouping the €60m fee they paid twelve months ago.
While a loan-to-buy deal offers a potential solution, the sale of McTominay would supply pure profit because of his academy upbringing. Erik ten Hag wants to keep the 27-year-old but is willing to part company to acquire Ugarte.
That said, the best-in-class setup under Dan Ashworth has altered the transfer philosophies in the North West and is willing to wait until the final hours of the window to seal a suitable agreement.
For many, the prospect of losing the Lancaster-born man would be a bitter pill to swallow, with hopes that he could remain as a squad player.
His desire and commitment to the club are evident, with a return of ten goals and three assists in 2023-24 a constant reminder of his value to the squad.
But his desire for a regular starting birth will prove problematic, and his price tag of £40m offers a genuine platform for a financial solution.
As we edge closer to the summer deadline of August 30, there is a growing expectation of further departures from the Theatre of Dreams.
