Manchester United officials have been left bewildered after news that academy starlet JJ Gabriel requested to leave the club a day before he could have etched his name into the history books.
The hugely talented 15-year-old was in line to become United’s youngest senior debutant, having been included in the matchday squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton.
However, our sources have confirmed that Gabriel, under the guidance of a family member, has had his head turned by an offer from an undisclosed Premier League club, citing an official request to exit M16.
The Theatre of Red is advised that officials are adamant they ‘couldn’t have done more’ to convince the player and his representatives of their intentions to accelerate his pathway to the first team.
Additionally, his decision to refuse to train since last week shocked the core group of staff who have worked tirelessly to lead this precocious talent towards a long-planned cup appearance.
Although shaken, United believe that the situation, initially reported by the Telegraph, can be remedied, and that the teenager’s current deal supplies time.
Gabriel is not permitted to sign professional terms until he turns 17 next year, and, despite a request to end his Old Trafford stay, the club cannot deregister his contract, which runs until the end of the season.
Understandably, JJ has quickly emerged as one of the game’s most exciting prospects and has attracted attention at home and abroad for several years.
His most recent exploits included a glorious hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut last week, further bolstering his reputation after notching 26 goals and four assists in 29 appearances last season.
Gabriel is also the most recent recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, and has been a regular feature in first-team training with Michael Carrick’s squad.
Speaking after last week’s 5-0 win against Sabah, Adam Lawrence, United’s Lead U21S coach, reiterated the ongoing efforts with individual development: “JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through.
“He’s been at the club for so long. He’s got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well.
“At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it’s about making sure that he’s getting the right exposure across different levels.
“We’re obviously not perfect, but it’s definitely something we put a lot of thought into, so it’s good to see him enjoying his football in a good place.”
Given the club’s attempts to progress the player towards senior inclusion, it’s reasonable to say that room could have been found on their 12-man bench against Sabah.
Regardless, I struggle to find any acceptable scenario where a teenager, or his representatives, can dictate affairs at Manchester United.
For now, uncertainty remains the prominent word coming out of Carrington, as officials work towards a solution.

Hi again Shaun. Big admirer of your work. These news couldn’t have come in a worse time with the teams struggles. He should have taken his life into his own hands and not let his dad take the decisions for him.
Suddenly what Amorim did not letting the Amazon series go through was a big plus for me and everything he’s done for this team outside the pitch was top-notch for me.
Ineos showing that the first thing they care about above everything else is money going through with this deal with Amazon.
As long as INEOS+Glazers are in the helm nothing will change and such talents won’t end up to Manchester either because of their family or because the blunt truth is that the only thing remaining for this club is the name and this alone right now won’t get you anything.
We are left behind day by day and we are seeing the same series in repeat for 13 years now.
The sad thing is that the worst is yet to come under this ownership.
Thank you for the continued support, George.
I agree that we need to remove the ownership, and I have supported that since the day I handed my season ticket back. But JJ’s family have caused this particular issue, and the idea that a 15-year-old, however talented he may be, can dictate matters through another individual is absurd. This is Manchester United, and he would have made history this evening. How anybody in his circle thinks that is not a pathway to the first team is beyond me.
