Manchester United have announced their second summer signing with Karl Darlow joining the club, subject to registration.
The former Leeds number-one opted to test himself on the biggest Premier League stage, putting pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option for a third.
Darlow, a Welsh international, joins Andrey Santos in committing to Michael Carrick’s squad, with aspirations of adding to his 74 top-flight appearances to date.
Having established himself as Leeds’ primary shotstopper, the 35-year-old follows the likes of Joe Jordan, Gordon McQueen and Eric Cantona in opting for the short journey down the M62.
With Senne Lammens firmly installed as United’s number one, and Altay Bayindir expected to depart, Darlow arrives with the anticipation of pushing the young Belgian to his limits.
Naturally, the idea of playing a supporting role could alter the mindset of any player, regardless of age, but the one-time Aston Villa prospect is eager to embrace the challenge ahead.
“I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” he stated. “I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers, and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.
“This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club, and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forward.”
Fresh off the back of a campaign that returned 22 Premier League starts, Darlow played every minute from January 17 onwards, and was a crucial factor in the side’s eventual 14th-place finish.
Speaking on Tuesday morning, Jason Wilcox said: “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad.
“We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.”
Having begun his senior career at Nottingham Forest following a recommendation from former United coach Eric Steele, Darlow enjoyed early loan spells at Newport County and Walsall.
He inevitably established himself at the City Ground, before a brace of impressive Championship seasons led to a maiden Premier League venture with Newcastle, a side where he spent eight years of his career.
Throughout a credible 16-year journey, the Northampton native has earned a reputation as a dependable goalkeeper, with strong shot-stopping and a very good command of his area.
Although it has taken time and perseverance to land the leading role and an offer of an extended stay at Elland Road, the allure of Old Trafford is hard to ignore.
As the great Gordon McQueen once said, “99 per cent of players want to play for Manchester United and the rest are liars.”
