Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Wales Under-21 goalkeeper Kit Margetson after agreeing a compensation package with Swansea City.
The highly-rated prospect makes the move to Old Trafford following the end of his contract with the Championship side, bringing with him an ambition to excel at the highest level.
Swansea were entitled to remuneration for Margetson, having overseen his academy development from under-15s to the senior setup.
The Welsh sensation is the son of former England goalkeeping coach Martyn Margetson, and arrives off the back of a hugely impressive senior spell in the Cymru Premier division.
Swansea were eager to keep hold of Margetson and spent several months attempting to agree on renewed terms, with aspirations of senior integration during the upcoming campaign.
However, United’s interest was made public in May when Malcolm Allen, a former Welsh international turned commentator, unintentionally revealed that Tony Coton was attending a fixture to monitor the player.
Kit opted for the change of scenery shortly afterwards, revealing on social media that his time in the South West had “come to an end”.
“I’m leaving with so much more than I ever imagined,” he added. “This club has given me memories, lessons, and moments that will stay with me for life.
“It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place that’s been such a big part of my journey.”
Margetson supplied a lasting impression at Connah’s Quay Nomads, playing 2,790 minutes across 31 fixtures, with eight clean sheets en route to a second-placed Group A finish.
Those close to Essity Stadium have applauded his remarkable maturity and desire to succeed on the biggest stages in Europe.
Internationally, he is considered a certainty for the senior level, having featured from under-16 to his current standing in the 21s.
Kit becomes the second Welsh goalkeeper to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, following Karl Darlow after his exit from Leeds.
“Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young goalkeeper Kit Margetson, subject to registration,” read the club’s official statement.
“The 19-year-old was most recently at Swansea City, a club he’d been with since under-15s.
“Last season, he had his first taste of senior football on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads and kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances, helping the Welsh side to qualify for European competition.
“Margetson has also earned youth international caps for Wales and made his Under-21s debut against Belarus in March.
“Everyone at United would like to welcome Kit to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”
