Fresh off a dominant display in the Manchester derby, Kobbie Mainoo has reminded a worldwide Premier League audience of his qualities in marshalling an Old Trafford midfield.
Having been reduced to a bit-part role under Ruben Amorim, the 20-year-old had expressed a desire for regular playing time to continue his personal development ahead of the summer’s World Cup.
However, Michael Carrick’s arrival has signalled fresh hope for a new chapter in the England starlet’s career, with ample expectations that he will feature heavily for the remainder of the season.
Despite accumulating 15 appearances in all competitions throughout the current campaign, Saturday’s outing was his first 90-minute showing since that gutwrenching evening at Blundell Park in August.
It seems rather odd, considering his technique, spatial awareness, and composure beyond his years, but Amorim routinely referenced player selections based on individual preparations.
His omission was not aided by a bizarre public showing from his half-brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, casting further doubt about his status.
Nonetheless, various individuals retained confidence at Carrington, and this Ineos sporting hierarchy was determined to keep hold of their young star, despite his growing dissatisfaction.
Having spoken to sources, we can reveal, following internal conversations, that both parties remain committed to his long-term future at the club as a key member of this new-look squad.
Kobbie Mainoo wants to remain at Manchester United for the foreseeable future
It is almost a year to the day that we revealed senior officials were confident of securing a long-term deal for the midfielder.
At the time, sources provided clarification on a shared belief in Amorim, his project and the future of the football team from a competitive aspect.
As weeks progressed and results dwindled, pressure began to build on the former Sporting chief, leading to an insistence on maintaining parity with his tried-and-tested lieutenants, Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes.
Naturally, a distinct lack of playing time left Mainoo feeling disillusioned, and contractual talks were paused amidst a request for a temporary loan move.
Since Rubens departure, certain assurances have been provided regarding the coaching structure, and although no player will be held higher than the football club, Kobbie’s qualities have been recognised.
The message we received today is simple: ‘The boy wants to play football and believes he is working hard enough to merit minutes. As long as he is not cast aside, an extension is in everyone’s best interests.’
United’s sporting department is at a crucial juncture of its tenure – Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada are under pressure to appoint a successful first-team coach, while also rebuilding the squad’s engine room.
Manuel Ugarte continues to struggle with the demands of English football, and Casemiro’s future remains unclear in the final months of his current deal.
It is common knowledge that Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are highly-regarded in Manchester, and Mainoo is viewed as a player who can complement any of them for a decade or more.
At a time when the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules will dictate the spending power on the Red side of the North West, Kobbie reminded the world of what the club already possesses against City.

It is no great secret that United have developed a star of the modern game, and although he has endured a difficult period, age remains on his side.
Remember, we are but scratching the surface of his capabilities. With continued playing time and trust from his interim coach, his ceiling is as high as any in Europe.
Truthfully, there are few better ex-players to put an arm around Kobbie’s shoulder than Carrick, given the legendary career he forged for himself.
Although the ethos of Sir Matt Busby has been called into question in maintaining the traditions of the club’s world-famous academy, Mainoo maintains the standard, paving the way for the likes of Shea Lacey, Jack Fletcher and many more.
How do you feel about Kobbie returning to the starting XI, and what do you expect to see for the remainder of the season?
