Manchester United drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday to claim a richly deserved point for their efforts.
A measured first-half performance from the home side saw them sit off and allow their visitors to dominate possession before Bruno Fernandes fired home a superb free-kick right on the stroke of half-time to give United the lead.
Ruben Amorim’s men were more aggressive in the second half and created plenty of opportunities to win the game.
However, the Red Devils failed to profit from their attacking endeavours, and Declan Rice fired home for Arsenal on 74 minutes.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Fernandes coming closest in the dying embers, only to be thwarted by David Raya.
In the end, a draw was a fair result, but United remain 14th in the table. Here are our five talking points from an entertaining afternoon in the North West.
Manchester United show they are up for the fight
It was another battling display against a top-four side under Amorim’s stewardship.
The former Sporting boss saw his men put in a fine display where they deservedly took something from an expectedly challenging encounter.
With many players missing out through injury, the Portuguese tactician had to make do with what he had available to him, and, in fairness, his troops responded with a passionate display in front of partisan home support.
The Reds took the game to the Londoners in the second period, creating several clear-cut chances to kill their opponents off.
As disappointing as it was not to nick a victory, Amorim will be pleased to share the spoils and witness some resilience from his under-pressure group.
Heaven impresses on his Premier League debut
It was a notably impressive league debut for Ayden Heaven against his former club.
The 18-year-old replaced the injured Leny Yoro at half-time and didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the second half as he slotted in on the left-hand side of United’s back three.
Whilst it is a small sample size, it’s encouraging to see the London-born defender looking so comfortable in a big game against a notable rival.
The youngster was composed and confident, dealing with everything that came his way – and even made a couple of forays forward deep into opposition territory as his side pushed for a winning goal.
Yoro’s knock will concern Amorim, especially with Real Sociedad coming to town for a midweek Europa League second-leg encounter. However, Heaven has shown he is ready to step up if required and provide a welcome remedy to his new club’s injury hell.
Bruno continues fine form
Manchester United’s inspirational skipper was at it again on Sunday, scoring a truly fabulous free-kick to give his side the lead.
It was another brilliant goal to add to his growing Old Trafford highlights reel and provided his troops something to build upon in an impressive second half.
Despite such an awful season for the Mancunian outfit, they can at least still rely on Fernandes for moments of magic time after time.
Amorim will be thankful for his compatriot’s contributions during his tenure and hope for more to come before the end of the campaign.
Mazraoui superb against Arsenal
Morocco international Noussair Mazraoui was absolutely fantastic for the hosts, defending well throughout and getting forward to great effect.
The former Bayern Munich man was deployed as right wing-back, and he drove forward more than usual, coming so close to restoring United’s advantage when he saw his effort well saved by Raya in the second period.
He combined well with Alejandro Garnacho down the right flank and was one of the standout performers on an afternoon where the record English champions probably deserved more than just a draw.
The Old Trafford faithful will hope for a continuation throughout the business end of the campaign.
R.I.P fan culture 1878 – 2025
Thousands of United supporters marched before kickoff to highlight a desire for change following 20 years of mismanagement provided by the Glazer family.
The planned protest was organised by The 1958, and participants wore black colours to ‘symbolise how the club is slowly dying’ under the current regime.
After two decades of severe negligence, with huge debt loaded onto the club, a once-model institution has been taken scarily backwards and is now facing potential financial ruin.
Sunday afternoon’s peaceful protest should be applauded as a section of the United faithful attempt to rid their club of the parasite-like proprietors. We stand with every one of them!
