While an array of Manchester United players have departed the North West for a welcome break from the scrutiny of Premier League football, Ruben Amorim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s backroom hierarchy are plotting their moves ahead of a crucial summer transfer window.
Expectedly, with International football stealing the attention of many, a whos-who list of potential arrivals has been linked with mega-money moves to Old Trafford.
As we know, paper will never refuse ink. However, many of these individuals forget the profit and sustainability-shaped elephant in the room and the necessity for departures to bolster a wounded transfer kitty.
Although noise has intensified for shrewd acquisitions like Antoine Semenyo and Jobe Bellingham, the allure of several uncontracted individuals has long interested the Manchester hierarchy, with Ligue 1 presenting a compelling prospect.
As we did in October 2024, the Theatre of Red can exclusively confirm that Jonathan David is a player held in high regard with several United officials actively engaging in conversation for a potential summer move.
The 25-year-old hitman is set to depart France at the end of the season and is keen to test his talents in England or Spain, with several interested parties across the big five leagues.
Manchester is calling for Jonathan David
For many, the Canadian International is somewhat of an enigma: A talented player who has enjoyed a comfortable standing within a league that compliments his abilities.
However, for purveyors of the continental game, this is a goalscorer destined for the opportunity to excel amongst some of the game’s most notable names.
Interestingly, United chiefs had enquired about his availability two years ago, with Lille president Olivier Letang refusing to sanction any deal for their prized hitman.
The Brooklyn-born attacker addressed the rumours in September 2024 while speaking with the Athletic.
“I’m open to anything,” David said. “I think, obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best leagues in the world. And for me, it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything, and every league has its challenges.”
Although Lille are enjoying somewhat of a stop/start season en route to their current standing of sixth in Ligue 1, David has continued to drag the forward line kicking and screaming with 33 contributions (23 goals & 10 assists) from 42 appearances.
But this will come as no surprise to those who digest the French game, with the former Gent star amassing 134 goal contributions (107 goals & 27 assists) in France and 52 (37 goals & 15 assists) in Belgium.
According to reports in Le10Sport, the Reds will face competition from Arsenal and Tottenham, while our sources confirm interest from a host of Spanish outfits.
We can confirm that Newcastle representatives are also monitoring the player’s situation, with Eddie Howe believed to be keen to bolster his squad during a summer window.
Shaun Connolly and Ben Jacobs discussed David’s contractual situation and willingness to move to the Premier League on the Theatre of Red Podcast in November, with murmurs that the 20-time English champions were willing to test the waters in January.
“Jonathan David is going to be in demand,” Ben said. “Manchester United are another club, along with Newcastle – Chelsea had a little look last summer. He’s somebody in great goalscoring form and is a free transfer come the end of the season.”
Presently, Old Trafford officials are hoping to sell the lucrative proposition of this compelling rebuild, with the possibility of Champions League football hanging on a memorable Europa League finish.
At 25, David is entering the peak years of his playing career. While many hold reservations about his suitability for a big move, we feel that his pace, skillset and eye for goal would prove an immense addition to Amorim’s evolving squad.
