Having stewed for over a fortnight following a routine victory against Leicester City, the Manchester United faithful are primed for a Tuesday evening trip to Nottingham Forest.
Despite the expectations bestowed on both clubs, the contrasting fortunes make for a compelling conversation. Ruben Amorim’s men occupy 13th place in the Premier League, while high-flying Forest boasts a five-point cushion in third.
However, a traumatic campaign that has seen the 20-time English champions flirt with the prospect of a relegation battle has shown signs of improvement, and a four-game unbeaten run offers hopes of momentum.
Furthermore, the allure of returning first-team players has enhanced a feel-good factor at Carrington, with Amorim motivated to sweeten the pot as his Portuguese revolution plays out at the business end of the season.
Manchester United team news
Much to the delight of many avid supporters, Mason Mount returned to the substitutes bench against the Foxes following a prolonged period on the physio table.
The former Chelsea star has endured an injury-ravaged term since his arrival, but is in line to earn valuable minutes at the City Ground.
Amorim has received a further boost with the return of Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, and Luke Shaw to first-team training, although the latter is not yet ready for a return to action.
Kobbie Mainoo is edging closer to an anticipated return, while Ayden Heaven will feature again this season following confirmation that his setback was not as damaging as many feared.
“Luke is not ready yet,” the Portuguese tactician confirmed. “We are starting doing some drills with the team. But we are getting Luke, Mason is feeling better, he was already on the bench in the last game.
“I think Kobbie is almost returning also, but not ready for this game. Jonny Evans is recovering, Ayden is recovering.
“Who else? Licha is out, you know, I think that’s it. Maguire is also ready to go to the game. Yoro, yes.”
Chido Obi will line out with the Under-18s for Monday’s FA Youth Cup semi-final at Aston Villa, while Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu has served his three-match suspension after being sent off against Ipswich Town.
Nuno Espirito Santo enjoyed a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford in December and can replicate the legendary Brian Clough with a first league double over the Reds since the 1992-93 campaign.
In contrast, Manchester United are looking to win consecutive league games for the first time this season and back-to-back away victories since February 2024.
Interestingly, the team that scores first in 71% of Forest’s Premier League fixtures this season has won the game. Crucially, in-form hitman Chris Wood is unlikely to feature, having collected a hip injury.
