As Sir Matt Busby once stated, “If they’re good enough, they’re old enough”.
This now famous mantra is widely associated with Manchester United and the club’s continued focus on developing some of the finest academy talent in world football.
Fittingly, another superb U18 crop will face Manchester City on Thursday evening, with aspirations of claiming a 12th FA Youth Cup title.
Kobbie Mainoo starred alongside former Red, Alejandro Garnacho, during our previous triumph in 2022, when the youngsters beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 in a near-capacity Old Trafford showpiece.
The progression of both players, even when the latter opted to take his chances with a move south, epitomises the opportunities available when talent and hard work meet the required dedication at Carrington.
And with another glittering list of potential stars offering a brand of attack-first football, there’s every chance we may unveil the next Kobbie at the Joie Stadium on Thursday.
Manchester United are primed for another crack at FA Youth Cup success.
Having seen off Peterborough, Derby, Oxford, Sunderland and Crystal Palace en route, Darren Fletcher’s side are looking to repeat February’s success when they last met the Blues.
But City finished four points ahead of United at the head of the U18 Premier League Group North, and aim to go one step further than last year’s Youth Cup final loss to Aston Villa.
Agonisingly, Fletcher’s lads suffered penalty defeat in the U18 Premier League Cup showpiece in April, despite crafting multiple winning opportunities on an evening where victory evaded them against Palace.
Nonetheless, the former midfielder is extremely proud of his side’s growth throughout the campaign, and was quick to acknowledge this following Saturday’s comeback win.
“They’ve been fantastic, unlucky in some of the results, dominated almost every game to be perfectly honest,” the Scot told MUTV.
“The goals conceded columns are great, but that comes from high ball possession, not giving the opposition a chance to attack us. Defenders and goalkeepers have played well, but the whole team sprint back when we lose the ball; it’s a big part of our identity.
“I think we’ve missed a lot of chances. I think that’s the one thing from this season, when we’ve dominated games, we’ve not been ruthless enough.
“We’ve created numerous chances in every game and not been quite clinical [enough], which has probably cost us [the league. It happened in the final at Crystal Palace as well.
“So, that’s definitely the lesson of the season, if you’re ruthless and take your chances, you probably go on and win things, so that’s our challenge going into the FA Youth Cup final.”
A brace from Noah Ajayi, either side of JJ Gabriel’s 23rd goal of a glittering season, sealed a 3-1 win against Stoke on Saturday and ensured a positive end to another Premier League calendar.
Both attackers have shone for Fletcher and are expected to play a significant role on Thursday, as is Danish wonderkid Chido Obi.
The 18-year-old hit three in his previous two outings for the U21S, as well as the all-important winner against Palace in the Youth Cup semi-final.
Having played a key role across the academy throughout this term, we’re advised that Chido is in line to compete for regular first-team consideration next season, supplemented by his eagerness to shine on the grandest of stages.
Those lucky enough to have grabbed a ticket will hope he can emphasise his ability with another memorable display at the Joie Stadium.
