Fixtures or knockout stage affairs can be loosely tagged as ‘must-win’; however, for Manchester United, the ramifications of a season without European Football can have significant knock-on effects.
Whether Ruben Amorim’s men require that sort of incentive ahead of Thursday evening’s Europa League semi-final with Athletic Club is yet to be revealed.
Despite a bewilderingly poor domestic campaign, United will enter San Mames Stadium as the only unbeaten side in this season’s competition through 12 fixtures (Won seven, drawn five).
Furthermore, the memory of the most surreal Manchester evening against Lyon has ignited a spark of belief within the Red machine, with several first-team members also returning for duty this week.
A partisan Basque crowd will inevitably fuel the Lehoiak dream, with La Liga’s fourth-placed side enjoying a memorable campaign. But, Amorim’s men have offered a consistent European threat this season and have ample ability to spoil Spanish hopes.

Interestingly, Manchester United have included Bendito Mantato as a late amendment to the Europa League squad ahead of the semi-final tie.
The talented youngster trained with the senior group on Wednesday at Carrington and was added to the B list for the competition, eligible to play as a homegrown player.
Amad and Matthijs de Ligt are both included following lengthy lay-offs and although Amorim has suggested they will not start, there is a suspicion they could feature from the bench.
Chido Obi and Sekou Kone are ineligible but have travelled, while Jaydan Kamason joins Mantato as the two squad members who have yet to feature.
“The rest of the players, we have a game tomorrow, then we have to train here Friday, so we need to prepare not just this game, but also prepare the next game against Brentford,” Amorim stated in his pre-match conference.
“So we took a lot of especially young kids to prepare the next game.”
Diogo Dalot is out with a calf injury, and Toby Collyer has not travelled despite partaking in individual training midweek.
Thursday’s meeting will be the first competitive European fixture between Athletic Club and United in 13 years since the 2011-12 Europa League Last-16 encounter.
The Basque side won both fixtures (2-1 at home and 3-2 away), eventually losing 3-0 against Atletico Madrid in the final.
Worryingly for some Reds, Bilbao holds the bragging rights from three of the four outings between the sides, with United’s last win coming in a 3-0 second-leg European Cup quarter-final victory in 1957.
However, as stated, Amorim’s men have enjoyed 12 European games without defeat in 2024-25, their longest since earning 15-unbeaten between November 2016 and October 2017.
