The first of six pre-season outings has come and gone, with Manchester United gaining some valuable minutes during a 1-0 defeat against Wrexham.
Although expectations can be varied at this stage of summer, the results count for little, with fitness the primary target ahead of a Premier League opener against Hull in August.
Michael Carrick’s men entered the Helsinki Olympic Stadium in good spirits, a ground where the Reds last played a competitive fixture against HJK Helsinki 61 years ago.
Joshua Zirkzee led an attacking line of Patrick Dorgu, Mason Mount and Bryan Mebumo, with Andrey Santos starting alongside Jack Fletcher in midfield.
While Harry Maguire captained the team within a defensive quartet of Luke Shaw, Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro ahead of Tom Heaton in goals.
Much of the opening 45 was largely flat, as both sets of players endured the expected lethargy following an eight-week break from competitive football.
Nonetheless, Mount offered reason for optimism in midfield with an impressive showing, as did Heaven, who earned a highlight recovery tackle on Bailey Cadamarteri.
But for all the initial style in the close-controlled buildups, United failed to register a shot on target, ultimately paying the price moments before the break.
Wrexham’s Sam Smith pounced against the run of play, tapping in from close range at the back post following some truly pedestrian defending.
Carrick introduced an entirely changed XI for the restart, showcasing the talents of the illustrious academy with an average age of only 20.
And while the likes of Shea Lacey and Tyler Fletcher couldn’t manufacture an equaliser, the youngsters generated an encouraging attacking display with ample commitment.
Harry Amass was promising on the flank, as was Jaydan Kamason, whose continued growth and maturity are starting to come to fruition.
Despite the defeat, several performances will have gained credibility within the coaching team ahead of a trip to Trondheim on Friday.
With much said about Santos following his £48 million move from Chelsea, the Brazilian international enjoyed a good cameo during his maiden outing.
The midfielder showcased his footballing intelligence throughout the first half, consistently creating space and offering himself for possession.
Defensively, he welcomed the expectation with a promising brace of blocks. While in transition, the former Chelsea man led with a forward-first mindset, routinely turning defence to attack.
“He’s settled in really well,” Carrick stated. “Fantastic character, settled in so quickly, and he’s buzzing to be here, you can see that.
“He’s a fantastic player. Again, not expecting anything crazy special today. It’s a step, you know, get your eye in and get back on the pitch again, and he’ll do really well for us.
“I’m really looking forward to the progression that he shows the longer that he’s here, to be honest. But today, the first one, it’s nice to get that first one out of the way.”
United will have six days to prepare for their next challenge in Norway against Rosenborg before a trip to Sweden to face Atletico Madrid on August 1.
