On an evening when Manchester United required a memorable display to inspire a potential season-saving juncture, Ruben Amorim’s men earned a comprehensive 3-0 Europa League victory against Athletic Club.
A partisan San Mames Stadium went from pre-match elation to astonishment as their side was reduced to ten and entirely outdone throughout the tie.
Goals from the brilliant Casemiro and a brace from Bruno Fernandes sealed an emphatic performance and result, positioning the 2016-17 winners in the driver’s seat for the return leg at Old Trafford in a week.
Manchester United in dreamland following a sensational evening in Bilbao
Contesting their 19th European semi-final in the wonderful Basque arena, Manchester United thought they opened the scoring after five minutes through Alejandro Garnacho before the video official confirmed his marginal offside.
Inevitably, Athletic Club responded expectedly and should have opened the scoring moments later when Inaki Williams inexplicably guided a straightforward header over the bar.
Amorim’s side enjoyed close to 70% possession throughout the opening half hour and were largely comfortable. However, the travelling support weathered a scare following a fast-worked counterattack that required a Victor Lindelof goal-line clearance.
The Reds were not deterred, and thanks in large part to the majestic wing work of Harry Maguire, took the lead through a Casemiro header on the 30-minute mark, with the unlikely hero of Lyon turning provider.
Things got even better a moment later when Dani Vivian saw red after dragging Rasmus Hojlund to ground, denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Fernandes stood up to double the lead from the penalty spot, calmly slotting past Julen Agirrezabala inside a cauldron of astonishing noise.
The Portuguese supremo added his second with play entering first-half injury time, profiting from an intricate Manuel Ugarte backheel before sailing into the box and side-footing home.
Astonishingly, Noussair Mazraoui rattled the woodwork with the final play of the half, highlighting the dominance of the Premier League outfit with hordes of Lehoiak understandably distraught with events.
Ernesto Valverde has solidified a notable outfit since his return to Bilbao in June 2022, but even he could hardly have fathomed the nature of the task following the restart.
While the majority of the 53,000-plus in attendance were visibly aggrieved, referee Espen Eskas was subjected to endless jeers against a backdrop of white paper protests.
Expectedly, the Premier League side were happy to retain control at their pace, with Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt introduced for the final 25 minutes.
Manchester United are a regular outlet for media negativity and narratives, but on a night when the Reds required leaders, 33-year-old Casemiro was exceptional throughout.
The Reds continued to probe for a fourth, but much of the Spanish onus relied on sitting deep and attempting to consolidate the scoreline for a fraction of an opportunity in the return leg.
Kobbie Mainoo and Amad entered play for the final six months plus injury time, with the latter making his first appearance since February.
Truthfully, it was an evening when the team in red and white failed to live up to their pre-match billing, as United arrived and conquered their Spanish hosts emphatically.
Given the contrasting domestic fortunes of both sides, few would have expected the nature of events in Bilbao. Nonetheless, Amorim’s men were worthy winners and delivered an away performance befitting the badge at a vital period.
We do it all again at Old Trafford on Thursday, 8 May, with an expectant Stretford End already gnawing at the prospect of a return to San Mames Stadium.
