Although he failed to find the net during yesterday’s 3-0 victory for Manchester United, Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee impressed with his work rate and link-up play, providing a glimpse of his immense talent against Southampton.
With Erik ten Hag lacking the presence of leading man Rasmus Hojlund, supporters have been eager for a clinical nine to supply the required cutting-edge.
It will come as no surprise that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his best-in-class backroom team – led by Dan Ashworth – continue to navigate the market for potential additions to bolster the first-team squad.
A whos-who list of star names has surfaced in recent weeks, but an exclusive report from Steve Kay suggests Dusan Vlahovic has emerged as a credible option during the January window.
The 24-year-old has previously been tipped with a move to the Premier League (PL), and a glowing reference from Ruud van Nistelrooy has increased speculation of activity in the North West.
A legendary recommendation
The report from football transfers claims the legendary Dutch striker is a huge admirer of the Serbian international.
Following a glowing recommendation from Van Nistelrooy, United chiefs will engage in an extensive scouting campaign over the coming months, with two years remaining on his current deal.
Mikel Arteta was keen to acquire the former Fiorentina man before his move to Seria A giants Juventus in January 2022, where he has notched two goals in four appearances this campaign.
Considering United’s continued battle to accommodate the PL Profit and Sustainability rules, it remains unclear if Ashworth could manufacture a deal for the €65 million-rated striker.
Tailor-made for the Premier League
Despite his relatively young age, Vlahovic has formulated an impressive resume with 262 senior appearances from his early days at Partizan to his Italian journey with I Viola and La Vecchia Signora.
Having amassed 115 goals and 19 assists throughout this period, his ceiling for further growth presents a tantalising prospect for any supporter.
Ten Hag has displayed an undeniable desire to harness a physically imposing nine who can rage war on the opposition defence – the Juve man is the definition of tailor-made for the role.
Given his size, stature and willingness to engage in final-third duels, a Premier League stint seems like a match made in heaven for the striker.
