Ruben Amorim’s arrival in the North West would inevitably inject speculation regarding players from his former Portuguese club. However, Manchester United has long courted one of the country’s latest teenage sensations, and officials have ramped up their pursuit in recent weeks.
It is no secret that Sporting is the definition of a well-oiled, perfectly structured football club.
From top to bottom, Amorim has cultivated a unique philosophy in Lisbon – one that has returned Leoes to domestic dominance at unprecedented levels.
Amongst the many superstars plying their trade at Estadio Jose Alvalade, 17-year-old Geovany Quenda has risen to continental status during his breakthrough campaign, with numerous eye-catching performances at the highest level.
Portuguese outlet A Bola has previously stated a long-term Manchester interest in the youngster.
Interestingly, fresh reports from the same source claim that Old Trafford officials are keen to hammer home a deal to guarantee the services of one of European football’s shining lights in the summer of 2025.
A Portuguese star that ticks all of the Ineos boxes
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has assembled a best-in-class backroom team at Manchester United to return the club to perennial competitiveness.
A specific framework is required to achieve this vision, with set parameters for first-team squad members aligning with an understanding throughout departments.
As we have seen throughout an enthralling summer, the academy and youth are at the forefront of this Ineos wish list, with Quenda as the definition of a tailor-made acquisition.
Per exclusive reports from Miguel Mendes and Nuno Rapos: “The Red Devils are preparing to wave a value that can unlock this phase of approaches towards negotiations.
“It’s 60 million euros plus bonuses through sports, individual and collective performance, numbers that the administration of the Leonina SAD naturally cannot ignore.”
The report states the likelihood of a deal being struck between the sides is an increasingly high possibility.
“The lions are open to negotiate, always with the certainty of keeping the wing until the end of a season.”
Admittedly, Senior Lisbon officials are realistic in their expectations for the player. They would love to keep him long-term and build a formidable attack around his talents.
But his star has only begun to surface and attracted the gaze of several European powerhouses. United are aware of this and aim to acquire an early deal that will rule out the prospect of missing out on the teen star.
Following a calculated contractual renewal in September, Quenda has seen his release clause grow to €100 million to match star forward Viktor Gyokeres.
Amorim signalled his intentions early, refusing to jeopardise his former club any more than he did mid-season. “I won’t be signing [Sporting players] in January,” he told media.
“I don’t know about the summer. The main thing is to hold on until the summer [laughs]. After that, we’ll see – Sporting’s players are very good players. I don’t know. We’ll see.”
The 17-year-old has cemented himself as a regular feature in one of the game’s most impressive sides and has International recognition with the Portugal national team.
His consistency earned 19 appearances this campaign and a memorable showing during the 4-1 demolition of Manchester City in the Champions League.
