Daily transfer speculation has become normality, with faces coming and going from the Theatre of Dreams.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group are determined to part company with certain playing staff, with Manchester United undergoing a highly-publicised shake-up.
Harry Maguire has become somewhat of an enigma within the fanbase, with many offering arguments for and against his stay.
Following a dreary period of isolation from the first team, the former captain stood tall during an injury crisis, and his stock again soared.
However, legendary striker Dwight Yorke thinks otherwise – with the treble-winning attacker believing the club should be ‘ruthless and get rid of him’.
Competition for places
Having sealed the coup of the window in landing Leny Yoro, supporters are eager to enjoy a paring of the teenager with Lisandro Martinez.
With competition for playing time likely to limit the former Leicester man’s minutes, eyes turn to his £190,000 wages earned weekly.
As cited by Mail Sport, Yorke outlined his feelings about the player when speaking with BoyleSports Premier League Betting.
“Harry Maguire could sit out the last year of his contract and know he’s going to play at some point due to injuries,” the 52-year-old said. “But United really need to be ruthless and get rid of him”.
“They have Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and maybe Leny Yoro, but Harry Maguire is in the position that he doesn’t have to go anywhere if he doesn’t want to.
“The opportunity has passed to get rid of him because he so desperately wanted to be at Euro 2024, and he would have done anything to play.
‘That was the time to move him so he could get regular football. So that opportunity passed, and he’s still there.”
An undeniable strength
Now 31, the Sheffield man has overcome adversity for club and country, with many happy to have his services on offer in the North West.
He provided an assured presence during last season’s injury crisis, excelling in various moments and earning the league’s Player of the Month award for November.
West Ham had tempted to lure the defender south twelve months ago, but a deal inevitably failed to materialise.
With Raphael Varane and Willy Kambwala departing Manchester, Erik ten Hag is without ample options in reserve.
36-year-old Jonny Evans will remain for the upcoming season following his contract extension, with endless speculation about the future of Victor Lindelof.
Matthijs de Ligt is eager to join the 20-time English champions, but Bayern Munich appear resilient in sticking to their asking price of approximately €50 Million.
Without sealing the Dutchman, the sale of a veteran squad member appears illogical and insensible.
