It has been a whirlwind 18 months for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, following his arrival on the grandest stage in November 2023 during a Premier League clash against Everton.
The teenager went on to have a stellar season for the Red Devils, culminating in a goalscoring appearance in the victorious FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City.
Unsurprisingly, the academy graduate earned inclusion in England’s Euro 2024 squad, where he played a starring role in the side that reached the final and ultimately finished as runners-up to Spain.
Although he has shown flashes of talent this term, the Stockport sensation has also suffered some injury issues, which have proved a disruptive factor in his season.
Having sustained a muscular issue during a league encounter with Aston Villa in October, Mainoo picked up another muscle injury during training before United’s defeat to Tottenham in February, ruling him out in the intervening period.
However, according to the latest reports, the midfield man is now nearing a return to action, offering an undeniable boost to head coach Ruben Amorim ahead of the business end of a troublesome campaign.
Persistent exit rumours are a concern for supporters
Worryingly, plenty of reports surfaced in January that suggested United may be considering selling Mainoo.
In the eyes of the powers that be, the allure of the ‘pure profit’ gained from any sale of an academy prospect is an appealing avenue towards significantly boosting a precarious financial situation.
Additionally, domestic rivals Chelsea have been rumoured to be interested in the midfield star, and talk of an offer north of £80m inevitably surfaced.
Thankfully, no such bid was forthcoming, and the ‘Stockport Seedorf’ stayed put, much to the relief of the Old Trafford faithful.
Manchester United remain confident of agreeing on a deal for starlet
On January 14, Theatre of Red chief editor Shaun Connolly revealed, via sources close to the club, that United are confident of agreeing on a long-term contract with Mainoo.
He went on to confirm a ‘shared belief’ in Ruben Amorim, his project and the future of the football team from a competitive aspect.
This remains reassuring news, especially as there had been concerns amongst a portion of the supporter base that Mainoo would not be an ideal fit within the Portuguese tactician’s system.
Truthfully, at a time of much concern, it would be a coup for the three-time European Champions to secure Mainoo’s future. His potential is immense, and it is imperative that we see his best years at Old Trafford.
Mainoo can be the future face of the club
Despite certain pundits claiming Mainoo will not figure in Amorim’s midfield plans, I don’t view this as an accurate assessment.
The 2022 FA Youth Cup winner is an intelligent and composed footballer beyond his years. He is blessed with undeniable agility and excels at driving the ball forward through his excellent technical dribbling skills.
This sort of profile is invaluable to any team, and while he is far from the finished product, Mainoo has time on his side and can round his game out to become a complete midfielder in Manchester.
Let’s hope Kobbie will remain in the North West and eventually develop into the world-class player that his talent suggests he can become. For me, his departure would be nothing short of a travesty.
