Potential transfers and far-fetched speculation are nothing new for Manchester United, but mounting reports of a move for a specific target are anything but.
Talented youngster Chris Rigg has been on the club’s radar for some time, with the Theatre of Red exclusively revealing an optimism to acquire his services as early as May.
The Hebburn native has firmly established himself as a regular feature for an impressive Sunderland side currently occupying second spot in the Championship.
Despite turning 17 in June, he has redefined the definition of talent over age, with 32 first-team appearances already accumulated in his young career.
Senior officials in the North West are keen to acquire what they believe is a generational talent, having previously missed out on high-profile youngsters like Jude Bellingham.
A critical decision to come
Rigg is a name well-scouted in Manchester, with HITC claiming the club views the teenager as a player who could grow into the next Bryan Robson or Roy Keane.
Additionally, TalkSport sources have advised of the potential of a January move in an attempt to beat Premier League rivals Newcastle.
The Black Cats would struggle to fend off the financial power of both sides, but the allure of regular first-team football is a valuable asset, with Rigg already starting five of their six league outings this campaign.
Furthermore, with his star growing in a competitive division within the ranks of a side pushing for Premier League football, individual progression is a fundamental consideration at this stage of his career.
Like many English youngsters vying for elite competition, continental interest may supply an attractive alternative.
Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are known admirers, with Spanish giants Real Madrid aware of the obvious talents of the English Under 18 international.
The prospect of following in the footsteps of Bellingham is a distinct possibility, with his brother Jobe playing alongside Rigg in this impressive Sunderland side.
