With two fixtures remaining ahead of the most crucial summer in recent memory, social speculation is at an all-time high for the Manchester United faithful.
The dogs in the street can tell you that midfield is the primary area being targeted, as Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada look to bolster their efforts towards achieving Project 150.
Casemiro’s imminent departure creates a notable hole that requires immediate attention, and Manuel Ugarte’s expected exit further weakens Michael Carrick’s options.
Expectedly, several acquisitions will be required if this team is to compete across multiple fronts, both domestically and on the continent. However, funds, or a lack of them, will dictate transfer decisions.
Elliot Anderson has always been the desired recruit, with names like Ederson also attracting plenty of admirers, should a move for the Nottingham Forest star prove too costly.
Still, beyond this, a more cost-effective and astute approach is needed to strengthen the squad. And in Joao Gomes, the 20-time English champions have long identified a Premier League-proven solution.
It’s no secret that Manchester United officials rate Joao Gomes very highly.
With Wolves relegated following a miserable campaign with just three wins from 36 outings, the futures of several of their first-team stars would appear to lie elsewhere.
Sitting front and centre is their former Copa Libertadores winner, who, at 25, has more than justified his capabilities at the highest level.
As we exclusively revealed in November, Gomes has gained many admirers at Old Trafford, with our sources then advising that he was “ticking the boxes” for Ineos’ meticulous sporting department.
Given his tenacity at the heart of the engine room, interest in his signature is hardly surprising, with Atletico Madrid keen on rivalling domestic attraction from Crystal Palace and Liverpool.
Still, with Champions League qualification earned and an impressive young team being carefully manufactured, the allure of joining Carrick’s dressing room is undeniable.
Additionally, Gomes has a close relationship with his former teammate and compatriot, Matheus Cunha, and, as previously highlighted on the Theatre of Red podcast, would welcome the move north.
With 115 Premier League appearances under his belt, the Wolves man has reinforced his status as a battle-hardened midfield operator, with an elite brand of defensive consistency within an underwhelming side.
He has consistently excelled across key metrics, including tackles, interceptions, ball recoveries, and individual duels.
Say what you will about embracing a dogged persona in central stages, but he is appropriately nicknamed Pitbull, and there are fewer divisions where that style can blossom so freely.

| Tackles won | 2.51 (97th) | 2.15 (93rd) |

While a potential deal would not remedy the entire conundrum in Manchester, it would certainly be a shrewd addition for a club with ambitions to reinvent its squad.
Make no mistake, Gomes’ defensive attributes are elite, and his consistency would bolster the ranks of any English outfit.
Although his time in the Black Country has been challenging, don’t allow that to overshadow what is already a stellar career.
The former Flamengo star has won nearly everything there is to win in South America, ranging from the Copa Libertadores to the Copa do Brasil and the Campeonato Carioca.
As we have previously stated, this is not some mediocre journeyman; this is a midfield general who is only beginning to see the light at the beginning of his peak years.
Diego Simeone knows a thing or two about the capabilities of an elite central player. That alone does not justify acquisition, but it should supply motivation.
Manchester United are indeed interested – that we can confirm. And while a player of Ederson’s ability is also attracting attention, Gomes presents a known variable with domestic traits.
