At 23, Lucas Chevalier would appear to have the football world positioned comfortably within his gloves. The French underage star has cultivated a notable reputation in Ligue 1, with Manchester United amongst a collection of interested parties.
Having amassed 127 senior appearances between the sticks for Lille while earning the UNFP Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year award for 2024-25, the Calais native also joined the national team setup in November 2024.
A string of notable performances has inevitably caught the attention of domestic and European champions Paris Saint-Germain as the future of perennial shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma remains unclear.
It is hard to imagine a world where the allure of representing Les Parisiens would not offer a compelling challenge to the youngster. However, the prospect of testing his talents in the Premier League presents a formidable alternative.
Manchester United are long-term admirers of Lucas Chevalier
United have been monitoring Chevalier throughout the season, and as previously highlighted on the Theatre of Red podcast, his age and potential ability meet the required standards of the Ineos hierarchy.
“He’s a player touted as the next big thing in France and has attracted the attention of Barcelona already,” Shaun Connolly stated in May.
“Truthfully, at that age – especially with a goalkeeper – it’s hard to know if he has the required mentality to enter a wounded dressing room and to affect positivity.
“But, there is a definite interest, should a move for Onana out of Manchester surface.”
Per Monday’s reports from Le Parisien via GFFN, Ruben Amorim’s side is joined by their Manchester rivals and Aston Villa in expressing significant interest in the Frenchman.
Naturally, given the necessity to maintain a suitable financial standing to comply with the Premier League and UEFA’s regulations, Andre Onana’s future will play a crucial role in pursuing a goalkeeping recruit.
Despite his age and lack of international prowess, Chevalier possesses a notable skillset with the promise of much more.
An impressive individual campaign yielded 11 clean sheets from 34 domestic appearances (32%), with only Rennes star Brice Samba earning higher, with 12 from 32 outings.
Les Dogues struggled to inject momentum throughout a season that returned a disappointing 5th-place finish as their number one conceded an average of 1.06 goals per 90 minutes played. However, he did manage a commendable save return with a 74.6% average.
Standing 6’2 with well over a decade of top-flight growth and potential to come, Chevalier represents a monumentally impressive goalkeeper with the talent and ambition to excel on the grandest of stages.
Paris may be calling, but Ineos is more than keen to assemble a starring cast for Amorim and his ambitious philosophy.
