Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League assist record en route to a 3-2 win for Manchester United against Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Carrick’s side took an early lead through Luke Shaw, utilising the energy provided by their 12th man on a day when Casemiro received an almighty Old Trafford send-off.
However, the second half returned four goals and further refereeing controversy, typifying the never-ending drama of European football’s most competitive division.
Morato, Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Morgan Gibbs-White played their part in a breathtaking 45 that supplied ample talking points with everything from bizarre officiating to missed chances and quality finishes.
The sum of all parts sealed a third successive home victory for the Reds, ahead of one final trip to Brighton next weekend, as this interim coaching team collected an 11th win from 16 outings.

Carrick made three changes to the starting XI that drew with Sunderland, with Diogo Dalot, Mbeumo and Casemiro returning to take their place in an attack-minded team.

Mbeumo last registered a goal against Spurs in February, his longest drought in three years (11 fixtures), and should have ended that inside 90 seconds of the restart.
The Cameroon international responded quickest to Amad’s cutback inside the area, before blazing a right-footed effort high over the bar from seven yards under pressure from the impressive Morato.
Typically, the Brazilian levelled proceedings with his first goal for Forest moments later, sending an attacker’s header past a helpless Lammens following an inch-perfect delivery from Elliot Anderson.
Then came the discussion about the nature of officiating at the highest level of the game, when Michael Salisbury took the near-unprecedented step of overruling his VAR colleagues.
Cunha put his side back in front within a minute after Mbeumo unintentionally used his arm to control the ball in the buildup.
Despite those in Stockley Park advising their colleague to conduct an on-field review, Salisbury ruled the handball unintentional and awarded the goal, much to the bemusement of everyone in the media room.
United assumed near complete control in the aftermath, routinely pressing to seal the win. Bruno, chasing the division’s assist record (20), couldn’t believe his eyes when Mbeumo skied his delicate offload on the hour.
But the pair eventually combined heading into the final quarter, as Old Trafford erupted with a record-levelling 20th contribution. Fernandes delivered a low cross from the right flank, with the former Brentford man sealing his 10th of the season.
Forest notched their second through Gibbs-White within two minutes after the 26-year-old put the finishing touches on a flowing transitional move, setting the tone for another pulsating Premier League ending.
Expectedly, Casemiro received a standing ovation with his withdrawal after 80 minutes, as an emotional audience embraced their Brazilian star following four memorable seasons in the North West.
Like so many fixtures before, play then began to resemble a basketball match, with a frantic back-and-forth encounter presenting several opportunities for Fernandes to seal his 21st assist of a remarkable individual campaign.
Dalot rattled the woodwork in the sixth minute of added time, before Joshua Zirkzee came within a Matz Sels fingertip of his first goal since December. All Bruno could do was smile.
Regardless, in what was an entertaining game of attacking, open football, United sealed a 3-2 win and guaranteed a third-place finish after a second half littered with talking points.
