Despite underwhelming results from recent performances, the allure of Manchester United remains strong – as a primary target contemplates his next move.
The form of academy graduate Angel Gomes has earned a second successive England call-up, with the Lille man a free agent in the summer.
United are one of many potential suitors for the midfielder, who has shone since making the difficult decision to depart the North West in 2020.
As we approach the latest international break to halt club football across the continent, the Edmonton native spoke with The Times about his career, international progression and plans.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has installed significant change at Old Trafford since his arrival, formulating the creation of his best-in-class backroom assembly.
The first team has also seen notable restructuring with a tailored project to construct a squad befitting the football club.
Gomes has been identified as a primary target for some time, particularly given his contractual status at the Ligue 1 side.
The talented 24-year-old spent 14 years in Manchester and was offered terms to remain. However, the prospect of regular first-team football reigned supreme, much to the dismay of many within the Theatre of Dreams.
But the possibility of a return has always been on the cards, with Gomes regularly in contact with friends and former coaches at the club.
“There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course, it’d be difficult to say no”, he told the Times.
While it would prove difficult, a remarkable list of European greats are monitoring his situation – with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund all keen to steal a march over Erik ten Hag’s side.
Furthermore, Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea are admirers and are eager to offer attractive packages and regular European football.
Gomes is aware of this and has a strong team supporting his decision. “As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad, I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all,” he stated.
United legend Nicky Butt is a known admirer of the player and has regularly waxed lyrical about his potential.
“The Spanish league is written all over for Angel. He could play in the Premier League easily – he could play for City tomorrow,” Butt previously told the PA news agency via MEN.
“When Angel left United, I said to him, ‘You’re going to go on and have an unbelievable career, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up playing against Manchester United for Barcelona or Real Madrid in the next five, six, seven years, because he was that good.”
The prospect of a midfield pairing with Kobbie Mainoo is a formidable thought, with the duo representing a future of academy representation at the heart of the team.
Considering the age profile of veteran stars Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, the addition of a man entering his prime would be a powerful display of Ineos muscle and desire.
