Following the suggestion that Manchester United will turn their attention away from Manuel Ugarte, the Championship has become a viable option for an alternative.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has targeted an ambitious rebuild, with multiple positions under consideration during the summer window.
A dynamic defensive midfielder remains a top priority, but the injury to Leny Yoro has supplied an unwelcome dilemma.
Having to comply with the Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules, shrewd acquisitions have long been a requirement, with a pair of Championship targets under consideration.
Ben Sheaf
English football’s second tier has long proven to be one of the more competitive divisions in European football.
At 26, Coventry City’s Sheaf is a player of substantial talent who dictates matters at the base of the midfield.
His profile fits the criteria within the Manchester United scouting framework, with our exclusive story in June confirming the club’s interest.
A former Arsenal academy star, the Dartford man earned notable plaudits from Arsene Wenger during his time in North London.
“He’s always ahead of the game, and his anticipation quality is absolutely huge,” Wenger told the Londoner’s official site in May 2017.
When analysing his skillset, Versatility is the premium synopsis, with notable metrics in tackling, interceptions, blocks and progressive passes.
It is not a case of ‘if’ Manchester United are interested in the midfielder – they are, but he is one of several options considered by the Old Trafford outfit.
Sander Berge
Per Laurie Whitwell in the Athletic, Erik ten Hag’s side is in contact with Burnley regarding the Norwegian midfielder.
Also 26, Berge is a dynamic player who can operate in a defensive capacity or an advanced role.
Whitwell’s report claims Burnley are open to a sale, with the physically imposing Scandinavian keen to build on his 66 Premier League appearances.
His profile is similar to Sheaf’s, with several comparable traits.
Berge impressed against Ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford last season and displayed impressive metrics across a troublesome campaign for The Clarets.
With an imposing 6ft 5in frame, his aerial ability is well known, but his ability to withstand pressure and effectively navigate out of a press is outstanding.
Furthermore, he clocked the 10th fastest top speed in the Premier League throughout 2023-24.
He represents another shrewd option to bolster United’s defensive options, allowing Kobbie Mainoo to affect the game further up the field.
The prospect of shopping in the Championship has left many individuals underwhelmed, with a general sense of dismay reverberating across social media.
However, perspective is necessary when calculating specific requirements for a desired setup.
Both players excel in their specific roles and have done so within inferior squads.
Ten Hag requires a facilitator in midfield to accommodate his six-man final third press.
Manchester United could do a lot worse than either option to fulfil the role in a rotation alongside Casemiro.
Ugarte remains the desired target, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his best-in-class backroom team have taken a firm stance regarding transfer dealings.
Should Paris Saint-Germain lower their financial demands, the club will return to negotiations for the Uruguayan – but they will not fold in their market strategy.
Let us know how you feel about the prospect of either signing in the comments or across our social channels.
