It is common knowledge that Manchester United have been on the lookout for a central midfield option to complement Ruben Amorim’s new-look team.
Old Trafford needs reinforcements in this department – that is abundantly clear – and officials have shortlisted their desired options to a select few.
One of those names is Carlos Baleba, a promising young player from Brighton, who continues to generate interest.
On the other hand, an alternative is Angelo Stiller of Stuttgart, whose progress in the Bundesliga has caught the attention of the three-time European Champions.
Crystal Palace playmaker Adam Wharton has been perennially linked over the past 12 months and is now a well-known quantity in the Premier League, coveted by many top clubs.
The latest one to crop up is Elliott Anderson of Nottingham Forest, with the England international a standout performer in Saturday’s 2-2 draw between United and Forest.
The case for Carlos Baleba at Manchester United
United have been closely monitoring Baleba for several months, and even explored conditions to sign him back in August.
Ultimately, Brighton refused to negotiate with the Red Devils at the time, but they could be open to a deal in January or next summer if the right offer comes along.
The Seagulls have set a price tag in the region of £100 million for the Cameroon star, but United would want to pay significantly less.
As per Theatre of Red editor-in-chief, Shaun Connolly, the North West giants continue to pursue a stable relationship with the South Coast club, with a view to making a move for their prized asset in the near future.
Undoubtedly, the 21-year-old wanted to move in the summer, and he would still be open to such, despite experiencing an underwhelming start to the campaign.
Baleba is an elite ball-carrier and would add crucial stamina and dynamism to Amorim’s engine room, excelling in duels and raising the team’s physical floor.
Of course, it remains unclear if United will go back in to try and secure their man with alternative names in the mix.
United appreciate Angelo Stiller
With the Baleba deal a potentially difficult one to negotiate, United could turn their attention to Stiller.
The German playmaker has been described as a world-class operator thanks to his elite passing skills and burgeoning performances in his homeland.
United view the 24-year-old as a more financially viable option, and, although no official talks have taken place, Director of Football Jason Wilcox and Director of Recruitment Christopher Vivell are huge admirers.
Our sources confirm that Stuttgart could sell for a fee of more than €50m, which would be a very tempting price tag for potential suitors.
A host of German clubs and Real Madrid have also been linked with Stiller, a player who is highly comfortable in possession, so he will surely be in demand this summer.
Elliot Anderson is proving popular amongst the United faithful
Anderson starred in the recent clash between Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, impressing with an excellent display from back to front.
Without question, the former Newcastle man made a strong case for himself at the City Ground on Saturday as he showed real bite in duels and registered an impressive 14 ball recoveries.
He looks like a true all-rounder, combining relentless energy with intelligent decision-making in his box-to-box role.
Interestingly, he cost Forest just £35m when he left Tyneside for the East Midlands in July of 2024, but his value could now double, with any interested parties likely having to stump up at least £70m.
The all-action England man has the makings of a smart purchase for any top side, and, if he does go to Old Trafford, he would be emulating a club legend in Roy Keane, who was the last player to swap Trentside for Manchester back in 1993.
Adam Wharton – a potential Michael Carrick replacement
Wharton’s rise from a promising Championship youngster at Blackburn Rovers to an FA Cup-winning England international at Crystal Palace has been effortless.
His stellar performances at Selhurst Park have seen him called up to the England senior side and become one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe in less than two years.
The Lancashire lad is a composed and intelligent player with an innate ability to dictate the tempo.
A deep-lying playmaker, Wharton has often been compared in style to former Man United midfield great Michael Carrick, both for his calm demeanour and his reading of the game.
The 21-year-old excels at breaking opposition’s press through quick, one or two-touch passing and can also carry the ball forward effectively.
Often played in a two-man midfield alongside teammate Will Hughes, Wharton would slot seamlessly into Amorim’s system at United, providing a ready-made solution straight away.
He would not come cheap, however, and could command a fee in the region of £75-80m at the very least.
With the winter window just around the corner, speculation will naturally begin to heat up, with an array of continental names linked with a move to the North West.
Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjulmand has been heavily touted, as well as the La Liga-based duo of Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid) and Lucien Agoume (Sevilla).
Whoever the Reds opt for could prove the difference in getting the club back into Europe next season, so it will be intriguing to see how things play out on this front.
One thing is for sure: Omar Berrada and Co. must get a deal done for one, if not two, midfield stars in the coming months.

The best option for me is Wharton. I think it would fit right in.
He’s a superb player, George. Truthfully, they are all excellent options in their own right.
