In a phrase I will forever attribute to my father, the man who set me on this life-long course of Manchester adoration, ‘paper will never refuse ink’.
For the 20-time English champions, this idiom is as relevant today as clickbait is for Michael Carrick’s United side, and every man and woman associated with the football club.
One of the greatest travesties to befall the media is silence or uncertainty. And therein lies a plethora of sensationalism, narratives and misinformation.
Fittingly, when factoring in Barcelona’s tedious approach to transfer dealings, Marcus Rashford is forever a prime example of this behaviour during an age of social news.
Manchester United remain committed to life without Marcus Rashford
The 28-year-old remains tied to an uncertain Spanish future, as the cash-strapped La Liga kingpins attempt to orchestrate an advantageous summer with limited spending power.
Hansi Flick’s team require one point from their final four fixtures to seal a 29th domestic crown, and wouldn’t you know it, they face arch-rivals Real Madrid on Sunday.
Nonetheless, summer recruits remain a crucial topic, with aspirations for a new striker and central defender topping their wishlist, inevitably leading to questions about their English attacker.
All things considered, Rashford has enjoyed a promising loan spell since making his debut in a 21-minute cameo during a 3-0 win against Mallorca in August.
He has since contributed 13 goals and 14 assists from 46 appearances in all competitions. Still, despite adding four of these in his previous five outings, the forward has become a squad player.
| Marcus Rashford 2025-26 | Appearances | Minutes played | Goals | Assists |
| La Liga | 29 | 1518 | 7 | 9 |
| Champions League | 11 | 579 | 5 | 4 |
| Copa del Rey | 4 | 249 | 1 | 1 |
| Supercopa | 2 | 32 | 0 | 0 |
Barca’s well-publicised desire to lower a previously agreed figure of €30 million, or, instead, agree a second loan deal, has resulted in speculation about his Manchester return.
Additionally, the Wythenshawe man’s social activity in celebrating United’s Champions League qualification, a first interaction in nearly a year, led to widespread conversation about his intentions, including from Fabrizio Romano.
Nonetheless, our Spanish sources continue to indicate that while Rashford’s departure is every bit as likely as his stay, the Catalans have not thrown in the towel on sealing his signature before their June deadline.
As we previously revealed, internally, some find his attacking style to be limited in certain aspects, but there is a deep appreciation for his qualities.
That said, there was an expectation that the loanee would have easily achieved double-digit scoring metrics in the league, particularly when considering his history and significant salary.
Joan Laporta, Barcelona’s President, prides himself on maintaining a charismatic public image, known for embracing the media game, while navigating a forever-demanding fan base.
The 63-year-old retains the majority of the support but is coming under increasing pressure regarding Rashford’s future.
Many of the Barcelonistes have grown fond of their English star. Critically, he also retains Flick’s admiration, with the German more than happy with what he has seen thus far.
Those in Manchester still regard Marcus as a significant player in the club’s history, one who epitomised the magnitude of growth from academy to first-team star.
However, this does not guarantee an open door, and we’re told that the majority do not anticipate a return.
Should a deal fail to materialise between these giants of the European game, an alternative location is not viewed as an issue, with increasing interest in Italy across several clubs.
Fundamentally, you can expect this transfer saga to drag on a little longer. But it’s crucial to remember that paper will never refuse ink.
What do you think is the best solution for Marcus Rashford, and would you like to see him back at Manchester United?
