It’s fair to say it’s been a strange couple of years for Marcus Rashford.
On the back of a career-best 30-goal haul during the 2022-23 calendar, the Manchester native saw his form dip dramatically during the following season.
Additionally, this was a campaign in which he fell out with then-manager Erik ten Hag and angered many at the club after a highly-publicised trip to Belfast.
Despite missing out on the England squad for Euro 2024, Rashford continued at Old Trafford. However, his output was considerably lower, and the United faithful were losing patience fast.
After Ten Hag was sacked in late October, a new Ineos-led hierarchy opted to bring in the highly regarded Ruben Amorim from Sporting.
Things started well under the Portuguese, with the Mancunian attacker scoring an early goal during Amorim’s first game in charge away to Ipswich Town.
This was as good as it would get; however, less than a month later, Rashford was dropped for the Manchester derby alongside teammate Alejandro Garnacho, signalling his inevitable departure.
Having found himself frozen out in Manchester, Rashford revived his career with a promising February loan move to Aston Villa.
Despite a slow start, he plundered five goals and four assists across all competitions as Unai Emery’s side reached the Champions League quarter-finals and secured a top-six finish in the Premier League.
A string of impressive displays convinced Barcelona to take the Englishman on a season-long loan with an option to purchase last summer.
Rashford looked at home in Spain and enjoyed a good spell in Catalonia, contributing 14 goals and 11 assists as Barca won La Liga for the 29th time.
Despite this, and to the surprise of many, the Blaugrana opted not to take up the chance to activate his relatively cheap £30 million release clause.
Instead, Hansi Flick’s side splashed a cool €70m on Anthony Gordon, who just so happens to play in a similar position to that of Rashford.
Today, the former academy graduate is enjoying his time with England at the World Cup in America. And despite recent reports stating he would be reintegrated into Michael Carrick’s squad, his future remains uncertain.
Rashford made clear his desire to leave United in an interview with Henry Winter in December 2024, and, more recently, has also stated a preference to remain at Camp Nou.
Now, with the likelihood of a prolonged Spanish stay diminishing as things stand, his story is up in the air.
Bayern Munich have been rumoured to be interested on more than one occasion, and a Bavarian link-up with international teammate Harry Kane could well appeal. Other continental destinations may be on the cards, too, with Serie A or Ligue 1 possible destinations.
While a Premier League return is less likely, despite the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Arsenal and Villa all offering admiring glances.
In my opinion, Rashford should be moved on from United immediately. At 28, he isn’t going to improve much more, and his £325,000-a-week wages need to be taken off the books for obvious reasons.
Furthermore, a large section of the supporter base no longer fully trusts him, with too many question marks lingering over commitment, hunger, inconsistency, and perceived negative dressing-room demeanour.
I am fully aware that some would be willing to give Marcus another chance in Manchester, as most would agree that the former youth prodigy’s talent has never been in doubt.
Still, all things considered, I believe a clean break is needed for all parties, and whilst value is still relatively high, United should look to move Rashford on permanently.
Marcus has produced some great moments for Manchester United down the years, and he has undoubtedly been one of the better players at the club during the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
But the Old Trafford dressing room is in a far better place today and has moved on from the culture of the last few years. Rashford should, too.
