With the Premier League unusually unpredictable this season, Manchester United have found themselves right in the mix for the European places, despite not yet hitting top form.
Ruben Amorim’s men sit sixth in the table, level on points with Chelsea, and just a solitary point outside of the Champions League places.
This promising standing comes after jumping six spots from 12th with a dominant victory against Wolves at Molineux on Monday evening.
A brace from Bruno Fernandes, either side of goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount, proved to be a very satisfactory outing for the Red Devils during a fixture that supplied ample reason for positivity.
Crucially, with the momentum gained from three games unbeaten, this side now has an opportunity to regain domestic authority during a congested festive period.
Manchester United now need to seize their chance
Unfortunately, inconsistency has proved troublesome, and several opportunities to move into the upper echelons of the table have already been spurned.
United failed to grasp their chance with an inexplicable home loss to ten-man Everton in late November, before dropping further points in a disappointing 1-1 draw with West Ham at Old Trafford.
Thankfully, Rubens Reds didn’t pass up a third opportunity at leapfrogging their rivals, finally getting the job done in the Black Country against their bottom-of-the-table hosts.
A frustrating opening 45 minutes left the visitors wondering how they had not put the game to bed. Although the second period proved a different affair, as Amorim’s troops fully expressed themselves and mercilessly put Rob Edwards’ team to the sword.
This sort of result should provide the team with a timely confidence boost and act as a springboard to finally garner some much-needed momentum.
With a busy schedule on the horizon, the 20-time English champions can potentially make some huge inroads towards the top four with a run of positive results.
They face Bournemouth next Monday before a pre-Christmas clash away at high-flying Aston Villa.
After that, the Mancunian outfit will welcome Newcastle, before concluding 2025 with the reverse fixture against Wolves at Old Trafford.
Whilst this is a mixed spread of games on paper, Amorim’s men should feel confident they can build some momentum, especially if they can muster a similar run of form as October, with three games won on the spin.
That said, the task won’t be made any easier with key players departing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which runs from late December to mid-January.
Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui are all set to jet off and represent their respective countries at the biannual tournament, presenting an understandable blow to Amorim.
However, this could equally represent a golden opportunity for others to shine, namely Kobbie Mainoo, Patrick Dorgu, and Joshua Zirkzee, with Benjamin Sesko expected to return from his injury layoff before the end of the month.
With the Premier League volatile this season, and teams continuously dropping points, the festive period once again presents United with a massive chance to put themselves in a position of power.
Hopefully, they can notch back-to-back wins with a home win next week, before a tricky-looking Yuletide trip to Villa Park on December 21.
What do you make of Manchester United’s season so far, and can this side take advantage of the inconsistent competition?
