It’s been quite some time since the allure of a magical Champions League evening under Old Trafford lights whetted the United faithful’s appetite.
For a club with such global stature and widespread admiration, a near three-year dearth from elite continental activity seems utterly bizarre.
However, thanks to the efforts of Michael Carrick, Steve Holland and a Bruno Fernandes-inspired outfit, the one-time Manchester kingpins are primed for their return on the grand stage.
Say what you will about the failings of this new-look structure, and the potential mismatches it creates; its expanded format has left many pining for the days of old.
But when Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FK arrive at M16 on Thursday evening, Valdas Dambrauskas’ men will be treated with the utmost respect.
Still, with all eyes watching, and the Manchester derby waiting in the wings, Carrick will demand a professional performance to avoid another unwanted early-season slip-up.
Bayern Munich presented the last test in a Champions League setting at Old Trafford in December 2023, as Erik ten Hag’s team crumbled en route to a bottom-place finish.
Ironically, much like the current side’s predicament, goals were a regular sight, with 12 scored and 15 conceded from only six fixtures.
Given this new structure, the Reds will feature in at least eight outings against a host of household names, and, with respect to Sabah, all offer a sterner threat.
Carrick is aware of the task ahead, though and, after a disappointing conclusion to the weekend’s draw at Everton, is relishing the upcoming schedule and the challenges each present.
“Totally different game Thursday, totally different game again Sunday,” the 45-year-old stated on Sunday. “I thought there was a lot of good things today that we can move forward.
“There was good things from Hull we took, there was good things from Ipswich, there was good things today.
“There is also things that we need to improve on, and it’s an ongoing work, and yeah, we’ll get ready for Thursday.”
United have never faced a side from Azerbaijan, and although the tie heavily favours Carrick’s men on paper, it would be foolhardy to disregard any Champions League opposition.
Sabah have earned their place in the competition, seeing off The New Saints, KuPS Kuopio, Aarhus and Hapoel Be’er Sheva to join the elite for the first time in their short history.
Despite being formed in 2017, Bayquslar enjoyed a memorable domestic double and claimed their maiden league title with a nine-point advantage over Qarabag last season, and will undoubtedly relish their moment at the Theatre of Dreams.
Fresh off his inclusion in the 30-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or on his 32nd birthday, Fernandes will be keen to ensure that his teammates deliver the required display.
And with testing trips to face Atletico Madrid and Como to follow, United must collect three points and set the tone for the remainder of the competition.
French official Willy Delajod will take charge of proceedings, with action scheduled to get underway at 8:00 p.m. BST on Thursday.
Predicted Manchester United starting XI (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Heaven, Mazraoui; Santos, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko.
