Despite the contrasting fortunes of both sides, the allure of a Manchester Derby will consistently supply an undeniable buzz across the city as Ruben Amorim and Pep Guardiola prepare to lock horns for the fifth time in their managerial careers.
Amorim and the Manchester United faithful are licking their wounds following a frustrating 1-0 defeat at the City Ground in a game where the 20-time English champions did everything but score.
Although still coming to terms with news of Kevin de Bruyne’s inevitable departure from the North West, Guardiola and Manchester City have enjoyed back-to-back victories against Bournemouth and Leicester.
Interestingly, with the reigning Premier League champions immersed in a battle for European football, a 10th defeat of a troublesome campaign could seriously hinder their ambitions, supplying additional incentive for their red rivals.
Eight positions and 14 points separate the sides before a ball is kicked in anger, but that will count for nothing inside a partisan Old Trafford, with the Reds enjoying the better of the recent encounters. Furthermore, the prospect of a league double should provide ample motivation for the home side.
Manchester Derby team news
Having made his long-awaited return against Nottingham Forest, Mason Mount is edging closer to consideration for a starting berth.
However, the medical department is keen to maximise the benefits of prolonged rehabilitation, with a substitute cameo as the most likely scenario. “Yes, he can start, but we have to manage his minutes still,” Amorim told the media.
In further positive news, Kobbie Mainoo is closing in on a return, having endured a setback of his own, but the side may have to function without the services of the in-form Matthijs de Ligt.
“I think Kobbie is returning to training, so we’ll see and assess for this game already,” the former Sporting chief confirmed. “Of course, he cannot play a full game, he’s a long time without training.
“I think Matta [de Ligt] has an issue. He has something during the game [at Forest], and we have to assess. I think the rest is normal.”
Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw have progressed in recent weeks, but neither will be available for selection.
United have not completed a Premier League double over City since 2019-20 and will hope to build upon the Amad-inspired 2-1 December victory at the Etihad.
Despite falling to defeat on penalties in the Community Shield, the Reds are undefeated in regular time in the previous three meetings (two wins, one draw).
Although there are positive signs of a steely recognition of this new-look three-at-the-back philosophy, United have not kept a Premier League clean sheet at Old Trafford for eight games, conceding 17 goals in nine outings under the former Sporting chief.
Even without the services of Erling Haaland, the visitors will offer more than enough threat in front of the goal, and a misfiring forward line will need to be on form to counter the Pep assault.
