With the summer window fast approaching, and Manchester United targeting creative attackers to bolster Ruben Amorim’s attack, Pedro Goncalves remains a player of notable interest.
The 26-year-old Sporting star is continuing his hard-earned recovery from a prolonged tendon injury, which halted a mesmerising start to the season.
Notably, the Theatre of Red exclusively revealed the club’s interest in February with a firm belief in his abilities to improve a struggling attacking line.
However, as was the case then, United are monitoring his fitness following his return to competitive action, which has seen him earn 249 minutes over six scaling appearances.
The Vidago man is one of several shortlisted by the club, and his familiarity with Amorim’s requirements and workload has cemented him as an excellent candidate.
But, given the importance of assured activity in a crucial window, the Old Trafford outfit is conscious of a setback that has dismantled the players’ campaign. Furthermore, Sporting remain committed to increasing his release clause with an improved deal at Estadio Jose Alvalade.
Ruben Amorim remains keen on Pedro Goncalves at Manchester United
Primarily a left-sided attacker, Goncalves cemented himself as a fan favourite with the Sporting faithful under Amorim. Up to his heartbreaking withdrawal against Braga, 66 goals and 47 assists domestically complemented his 19 contributions across Champions League and Europa League outings.
His star was evident against Manchester City during a memorable 4-1 Champions League victory in November, with Sporting holding three wins from four outings at the final whistle.
Ultimately, this tendon issue derailed another stellar start to Verde e Branco’s campaign, with 11 goal contributions in 12 outings (five goals, six assists), highlighting his importance to the side.
While concerns exist regarding a potential recurrence, Goncalves remains an option, considering his characteristics and ability to adapt to this new-look United system.
As we stated in February, this is not just a good attacking player in Portugal; he is a remarkable talent who can transform the fortunes of any side in European football.
| Pedro Goncalves | Primeira Liga 24-25 | Per 90 minutes / Percentage | Percentile |
| Shots on target | 1.28 | 97 |
| Shot conversion rate | 63.64% | 91 |
| Expected assists (xA) | 0.70 | 99 |

| Successful crosses | 2.37 | 99 |
| Dribbles | 4.01 | 96 |
| Dispossessed | 1.46 | 12 |
Although we’re advised that nothing is advanced at this stage, the player would be keen on the prospect of reuniting with his former coach in the North West.
Interestingly, Goncalves is represented by the Gestifute agency, with Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte presently registered as key clients.
Jorge Mendes retains ties with several players across Manchester, and, although potential negotiations for a new deal are growing in Portugal, the 20-time English champions represent an undeniable prospect should they opt to pull the trigger.
