Having dusted off a portion of a horrific Carabao Cup outing in Cleethorpes, Ruben Amorim and a wounded Manchester United squad will welcome Burnley for a first Saturday outing of the new Premier League campaign.
With everything from the possibilities of managerial resignations to the departure of fan-favourite academy talents, it’s been anything but ideal for an already dejected fanbase.
Still, while a shattering performance against Grimsby leaves an indelible scar, an immediate response against a newly-promoted side will go a long way to cleansing some of the expected social toxicity.
Without a win in two league outings following a defeat to Arsenal and a draw against Fulham, the Old Trafford faithful will be eager for a statement showing before a two-week international break signals a halt to club proceedings.
Although the feel-good factor is well and truly forgotten, there is ample opportunity to leave a lasting impression, with meetings against Manchester City and Chelsea to come.
Manchester United team news
Amorim addressed the media during Friday’s pre-match press conference and, in his unique manner, brushed aside the suggestion of his imminent departure while jokingly acknowledging his need to improve at managing his emotions.
Noussair Mazraoui is yet to feature this season following an unfortunate setback. However, he is making solid progress with an individual rehabilitation programme.
Ultimately, despite that midweek setback, Ruben is pleased with the conditioning of his squad and responded positively to questions about their state ahead of the weekend.
“Really well,” he stated. “I had some choices to make [for the weekend’s side]. It was hard. I tried to choose the best starting XI, knowing that, sometimes, it’s not the starting XI that is going to finish or close the game, so everyone is really important.”
We witnessed eight changes against Grimsby, with Andre Onana, Tyler Fredricson, Joshua Zirkzee, and Kobbie Mainoo receiving their first minutes of the season. Given the spotlight on the future of the latter, his situation will supply inevitable discussion.
As is now common knowledge, the Stockport-born midfielder requested a loan move before the transfer window closed, stressing his desire for first-team football, while maintaining his connection with his boyhood club.
Naturally, this has generated further concern and division.
United were quick to dismiss the prospect of Mainoo leaving, citing his importance to the first team and their desire for the player to fight for his place.
Remember, despite not featuring in the opening two league outings, Kobbie made 37 appearances in all competitions last season, including 25 from the 27 he was available for in the Premier League.
Following the most forgettable of weeks, Amorim requires a result against a Burnley side who have managed one win from their previous 25 trips to the North West.
United are unbeaten in the last 23 Premier League games against promoted sides, last falling to a 4-1 loss against Watford in November 2021.
Although there were little to no positives to take away from Bludnell Park, Bryan Mbeumo opened his account with an impressive finish, and there is hope he can carry that forward in this new-look attacking line.
Predicted Manchester United starting XI: (3-4-2-1): Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Amad, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko.
