Having suffered a traumatic setback during an academy outing in August, Manchester United prospect Sekou Kone has returned to grass sessions as he continues on the road to recovery.
The 19-year-old left teammates and medical personnel concerned for his well-being following a worrying head injury during the U21 fixture against Tamworth, with the match ultimately postponed as a result.
Thankfully, the nature of the incident was not as severe as initially thought, and the Mali native is set to rejoin his teammates in the coming days.
Crucially, Kone has impressed Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff with a stellar work ethic and desire for growth, with an opinion within Carrington that he will see senior game time this season.
There is a clear path for progression for Sekou Kone in Manchester
At a time when the midfield remains a hot topic of debate amongst the Old Trafford faithful, many believe that Kone is primed to develop into a credible option for the former Sporting supremo.
After supplying one of the few positive points of a post-season tour, Sekou was, perhaps, a surprise omission throughout a largely productive pre-season cast, remaining an unused option in four of the five outings.
Naturally, this led to speculation regarding his future and whether Amorim felt his time and abilities were best utilised elsewhere.
But a decision to retain his services in the North West, when so many others have departed on loan for further development, offers more than a glimmer of suggestion about his current standing.
As is common knowledge, Kone’s performances at the 2023 U17 World Cup earned comparisons to the great Yaya Toure, with his midfield dominance supplying a crucial ingredient towards Mali’s third-placed finish.
Now 19, the memories of a £1 million transfer fee are long gone as a once-raw talent continues to progress within the battling constraints of a challenging English development portfolio.
Following careful planning and meticulous integration, the youngster collected 14 appearances across the EFL Trophy, UEFA Youth League, and the Premier League 2.
Additionally, two assists from three outings in the prestigious Maurice Revello Tournament further enhanced a growing cry for senior integration for The Eagles.
Injury may have quelled the start to what many believe could be his breakout year for the football club, but we are not discussing any ordinary teenager.
Sources close to the Theatre of Red have highlighted a notable work ethic and sustained self-belief that rank among the highest within a budding academy setup.
Realistic expectations must prevail, though. This is a young talent who has yet to experience the realities of senior football at the highest level. Amorim is aware of this and keen to maximise his time within training scenarios before intense exposure.
Until then, continue to enjoy his development within a group of exceptionally capable players. The rest will take care of itself.
