For a 23-year-old Belgian with just 35 Jupiler Pro League appearances under his belt, walking out at Old Trafford may seem like an intimidating prospect.
But for Senne Lammens, it was simply par for the course, and a birthright for a goalkeeper with an old head on young shoulders.
When Manchester United completed an £18.2 million deal for the former Royal Antwerp prospect, many jumped to criticise the decision to entrust youth with such a difficult role.
Regardless, the Reds’ data department was confident in a man who led the way in saves across Europe’s top 10 leagues the previous season and who ranked among the highest goal-prevention metrics in the game.
Fast forward to the present day, and Michael Carrick will happily beam about his goalkeeper’s capabilities, with a phenomenal ceiling and a pleasant, unassuming personality to match.
So, you’ll appreciate how none at the football club were surprised to learn that Lammens had been named the Premier League’s Transfer of the Season following an assured 32-fixture showing in the North West.
It has become all too common for negative agendas to surface around M16, and a single mistake can often lay the foundations for any player’s downfall.
But despite the dated ramblings of some bitter ageing men, Senne has become an integral cog for an ambitious side with aspirations of perennial success, and he is only getting started.
Senne Lammens has earned his recognition as the Premier League Transfer of the Season
The Zottegem native didn’t debut until gameweek seven of the season against Sunderland in what was a costly reminder of the importance of getting your transfer business done early.
Nonetheless, he was assured from the opening whistle, earning the first of eight Premier League clean sheets in a 2-0 victory, as supporters embraced their latest hero with cries of “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?”
One of the greatest compliments you could pay Lammens is that you rarely find yourself speaking about him. That may seem minuscule, but the Stretford End has endured its fair share of goalkeeping agony in recent years.
A fundamental requirement for any recruit is a positive character, one that can fit into a dressing room seeking total unity.
Ability is one thing, but you can’t put a price on mentality, and this plays hand in hand with the Belgian and his role in a new-look squad.
“You can feel the positive atmosphere that is being created here, and I know that I can make a real impact at the club in the coming years,” he stated upon his unveiling.
“I cannot wait to get to know my teammates and begin working with Ruben [Amorim] and the coaching staff. This is the perfect place to keep developing, grow together with this exciting team and achieve my career objectives.”

Say what you will about the merits of a third-place finish for the one-time kingpins of English football, but a Champions League return is a damn sight better than a campaign without any European involvement.
The memories of a horrific 15th-place travesty still linger, but Lammens and his fellow new arrivals have instilled hope in a disgruntled fanbase.
With two nominations for the division’s Save of the Month award already under his belt and a first International cap earned in November, the one-time Club Brugge academy prospect is now preparing for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
Paul Scholes may have disregarded his capabilities before a ball was kicked, but United’s number one is focused on what truly matters, and there is more to come.
Long may that continue!
How do you feel about Senne Lammens after a memorable debut season at Manchester United, and has he proved his doubters wrong?
